Scots Labour criticised the new sentencing provisions as a criminals’ charter that would undermine confidence in the justice system.

Richard Baker, the party’s justice spokesman, said: “Communities expect those who break the law to be punished properly and this soft-touch approach will do nothing to deter lawbreakers. As a package, these plans are unsupportable and look unlikely to receive the necessary parliamentary backing.”

Still in 2024, Scottish Labour’s Anas Sarwar was against early release or doing away with short sentences:

In November 2024, Scottish Labour was still telling folk that early prison releases were evidence that the SNP did not care for the protection of the elderly and vulnerable in Scotland.

This afternoon, how will Anas deal with this:

The SNP has not told judges what to do nut it looks like Labour plan too.

Will the ‘Scottish’ media ask Anas what he thinks and how he justifies it?

Why is this less urgent in Scotland?

  1. Half of the prison numbers are neurodiverse without the proper support. Half should be in proper rehab facilities.

The Scottish Gov have increased funding for proper rehab facilities. £250Million over five years. New rehab facilities are opening all over Scotland. Drug deaths will go down.

In England drug deaths are recorded in three different categories. Death with poisoning, heroin death or misuse of drug deaths. Keeping death from drug numbers down. In Scotland they are recorded as a total. Making Scottish drug statistics number higher by comparison.

  2. 7,500 men in prison. 200 females. Prison is a gender issue. Men are more aggressive/violent? Or more should be in rehab facilities.

  3. Most crime is committed while under the influence of drink or drugs. 7,500 men are in prison in Scotland. 200 women. It is a gender issue. More proper rehab facilities. Less crime?
