Professor John Robertson OBA

From the Guardian today:

While those who achieved a grade 4 and above (pass) was 70.4%, a slight increase from 70.4% [sic] last year.1

GCSE is, of course, only undertaken in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by pupils around 16 years of age.

In Scotland:

Scottish National 5 certificates grade A to C are equivalent to GCSEs grade grade 4 to 9 . 2

How did Scottish pupils do in this assessment also typically taken by pupils at the end of 4th Year, at around 16 years of age?

According to SQA, attainment rose across the board compared to 2024. For National 5 exams, 78.4% of candidates achieved A to C grades (up 1.1 percentages points).3

So, for a pass, that’s 78.4% for Scotland and 70.4% for England [11% more].

Remember that’s 11% of 147 000, 16 170.

  1. Well done to the kids, the not so ‘Scottish’ media should be congratulatiing them and the SNP, for their support for those who may otherwise been shut out of having the opportunity to thrive, had Labour been at the helm at Holyrood.

  3. Girls do better than boys but not in life long chances. Women have less pension incomes and more caring responsibilities. The pay gap.

Scotland has the most highly educated population in the world. Life long learning. The ability to learn. Not the ability to pay. The highest number of universities, colleges and apprenticeships, pro rata.

Westminster has taken and wasted Scotland’s wealth for centuries. Lie, after lie, after lie. Devolution has improved Scotland. Independence would be even better.
