Professor John Robertson OBA
With the UK media saturated with frankly disturbing jingoism based on myths about WWII, it seems like a good moment to repeat this attempt to resolve the alleged myth that Scots had given more in blood on the WWI battlefields.
On 10th August 2014, with clear political intent, the Scotsman allowed Sir Hew Strachan to confirm it as a myth:
Great War worst for Scots troops ‘a myth’
https://www.scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/great-war-worst-scots-troops-myth-1529401
In Patrick Watt’s Manpower, Myth and Memory: Analysing Scotland’s Military Contribution to the Great War in the Journal of Scottish Historical Studies, on 24th May 2019 based on extensive research, a different fact emerges:
Overall, 91,800 out of the 702,410 fatalities sustained by the British Army were born in Scotland. This is a 13.07 per cent share of the British total, some 2.6 per cent higher than Scotland’s share of the British population. Even using the highest estimate of British army casualties supplied by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (759,062 soldiers) gives a 12.09
per cent share of the British total, compared to 10.47 per cent of the British
population. The combined total of war dead for all three services – 102,500
soldiers, sailors and airmen – means that 13.78 per cent of the ‘official’ British total from 1921, or 12.32 per cent of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission total were born in Scotland. Therefore, it can be said with certainty that men born in Scotland did suffer disproportionately more deaths during the war than the other nations of the United Kingdom.
It’s a long hard read at:

I’m going to dispute the arithmetic.
At total of 702 410 UK Army fatalities.
With 8% of the UK population, all things being equal, Scotland might have been expected to suffer 8% of the 702 410 or 56 192 but had 91 800, 63% more!

WAS THAT THE HIGHLAND CLEARANCES ALL OVER AGAIN

One of the most disgusting aspects of English colonial rule is the inability of Scotland to develop and grow its population. In this case the 8% of the population calculation may be invalid as in 1918 I think Scotland’s population as a percentage of the UK as a total would have been higher.
What we do know that as a percentage, Scotland’s population was about 20% of the UK total in 1707 and now it is 8%. That’s more shocking a statistic than the disproportionate war dead.

Another offensive act that references ‘sacrifices made in wars’ is one where the current UK PM, Keir Starmer, pumps out his annual St George’s day video message on his Twitter ‘X’ account.
A message that is meant to both celebrate and highlight only all things ‘English’ that he, as an Englishman first and foremost, wants the whole UK to recognise and so acknowledge.
But it is where he , Starmer , the obvious non neutral and clearly English biased supposed UK PM , always mentions in his annual St George’s Day video message….all of those who ‘fought in the wars for their country’ and who made “the ultimate sacrifice for their country” ……however…….
That is highly inappropriate for him as the UK PM to include that as a reference, in what is meant to be a message that is posted to celebrate England only and also to celebrate only it’s English National saint…..
As surely as Soldiers , Sailors and Air personnel then they, as English men and women, were those who both fought in and worked within the ‘British’ Army, Navy and Air Force….and not just as English Soldiers, Airforce personnel and Sailors ?????
(British also included service men and women from other UK Nations too including NI).
However it seems that your English UK PM, Keir Starmer (like Sir Hew Strachan’s supposed Myth ‘buster’) wants us to believe “the myth” that it was England alone who fought in the wars only, and so then only they represented those who made the “ultimate sacrifice” and so were only those who “fought in the wars for their country” so was that fighting only for England or did they fight for Britain ?…..).
It’s not just trying to rewrite history but it is also them trying to erase the inclusion of others within the British State who also fought in wars and so then they too, as other nations within the British State, also suffered great losses too as part of the British (English ?) State………..as other nations, as well as England, also made the ‘ultimate sacrifice for their respective countries as part of the British State”……..
However certain parts of the English establishment prefer that the role of our nation , Scotland, and also other nations (outwith England) within their Britain are diminished as nations that have contributed to both the wealth of their British (English) state and also the security of their British (English) State (in wars) and also now with Scotland being forced, against it’s will, to house their UK (English) Nuclear weapons of mass destruction……..
#RadioActiveLeaks…..#Wheesht-For-Nuclear-Serious-Incidents.
Basically they , the English establishment, view England as being synonymous with Britain….in everything…..including wars fought with other nations within the World……so then they only recognise England’s contributions to and for everything within their ‘British’ State……a State that they view as being theirs alone , and so only for them to take control of and so hold all of the money and powers mostly for their benefit alone ……
As apparently all other nations within their British (English) State, apart form England, are subsidised, but by whom and by what ?….
Do they mean we are subsidised by the British State or by England….or is that seen by them as being the same thing ?…..it is , is it not.
That the problem then…
Hence why many of us are seeking Scottish independence…..to then finally dispel the other English political and media myth that “We (Scotland) need them (the British State or England?) more than they need us (Scotland)”.

nobody does remembrance type celebrations quite like the English, bugles an trumpets, long faces and solemn commentaries, the King on parade all the politicians remembering the fallen.
what about the lads who didn’t fall, the ones who came home with serious injury, mental problems, how are they looked after? not very well by the amount of ex service in jail, homeless, struggling to get by?
the dead are very well remembered, but the living are forgotten about.
