After independence could they base the Trident subs in London’s Tilbury docks?

Professor John Robertson OBA

Thanks to Graham (?) for this comment:

In the case of Faslane as the crow flies from there to Glasgow city centre it would be the equivalent distance of a Nuclear base being situated at Tilbury docks London. It’s always the same. Keep anything remotely hazardous as far away as possible from London and the Home Counties. But they want to control it though and reap the benefits from it. Everyone else is expendable. Especially us uppity Jocks.

I’ve checked, roughly, with just one Scottish crow available in Scotland and a taxi driver in London, but Graham‘s point holds.

It’s 26.6 miles from Faslane to Glasgow city centre and 25.8 from Tilbury docks to the City of London. No more needs to be said.

  1. Perhaps Lard Baron Ffoulksakia could be the new Admiral of the Fleet. Ensconced in a wardroom somewhere under the seven seas, the Noble Lard Baron would carry-on as usual— “Make mine a double Alphonso, and be quick about it”!

  2. At the moment the only place that has the capacity for Faslane and Coulport is King’s Bay , Georgia in the USA and IIe Longue Britanny France. When Labour Wales offers Milford Haven the Royal Navy laughed that suggestion right out the park as next door is a Liquified Natural Gas facility. RN commanders said it would be difficult to find such accommodation anywhere in UK that would suit its needs. We have also got to say that if Scotland was independent then the SNP would disband and more than likely Scottish Labour would be in power for perpetuity, they might take a different stance and charge the English government a rent.

    1. Without “London” telling the ScotLab Puppet Party what to think/say, I doubt they would even exist in an independent Scotland, and many of their politicians would remain south of the border.

Yes, Faslane/Coulport could be, like Diego Garcia, rented out, but a Professor Chalmers asserted that a replacement could be built for about £3.5 billion (2014 money). He did say that finding a site would not be easy, though as always the north west of England got a mention.

      1. My keyboard’s gone weird but was going to say ‘Scottish Labour’ would be defunct in an independent Scotland, being as they’re registered in England. No thanks!!

      2. Arty l fully support the SNP but l cannot see the SNP being a political party after our independance. I think a lot of Unionist Labour would also leave and we could return to a real Socialist Labour and not an English Labour tory Tribute act.

          1. Yes a socialist Labour. As a union rep and committed socialists we often have the independence conversation and like me we want independence. Once this is achieved we would as union members vote our own representatives into Labour and not the likes of Lady Baile of Greggs or people like the millionaire dentist, both just looking for a seat in the peado dome House of Lords.

    2. Always this nonsense, “SNP will disband”. You’re telling us this? Folk forget many of the SNP policies have been implemented and working well here. They have a track record.

They have many policies besides Independence. They will not disband. They are the Party in the very best position to negotiate the many issues which need dealt with, especially the issue of Faslane.

      1. Yes they do have many excellent policies and some not so good . As a committed independence voter and socialist l want to see Scotland back to its true socialist roots. The modern Labour Party don’t offer that and they will need to realign themselves with the electorate. Many of the Unionist labour luvvies with withdraw from politics and more left wing socialist will take up the reigns. I cannot see the SNP carrying the torch for us.

        1. Nope. The UKEnglish Labour branch office will just refashion themselves as a Scottish party, left, right and centre…whatever suits their agenda.
The SNP will remain strong, because their policies are actually ‘left wing’ and more ‘socialist’ than Labcons. You just have to look at the SNP record so far, (it’s not hard to find!) and given the 300+ years of full English rule, the SNP have worked miracles in taking the measures they have done, to mitigate EngGovs’ disgraceful austerity assault on the poor. SNP have worked within devolution confines against the odds, not least fiscal restrictions imposed by England’s gov. Go take a look.
