‘A bottomless pit of hell’ – US researchers confirm the risk to Scots children of living downstream of sites like Sellafield, Europe’s ‘most toxic radioactive waste site’

Professor John Robertson OBA

From the Journal of the American Medical Association (Impact factor 50 – 7th highest of 500 peer-reviewed medical research journals) published 16 July 2025:

Question  Is there an association between cancer incidence and living near Coldwater Creek [map above] as a child when it was actively being contaminated by radioactive byproducts from the Manhattan Project?

Findings  In this cohort study of 4209 participants, living near Coldwater Creek as a child was associated with an increased risk of overall cancer during long-term follow-up, with evidence of a dose-response association. When comparing those living around the creek or its floodplain (≤1 km) with those living further than 20 km away, the association with cancers known to be radiosensitive during childhood was stronger than that of nonradiosensitive cancers.

Meaning  These findings suggest that childhood residential proximity to Coldwater Creek is associated with an increased risk of cancer, likely through radiation exposure associated with the creek.

Research by UK universities, directly nuclear industry or UK government-funded, or dependent on wider government support, regularly do not find significant evidence that living near or downstream of nuclear waste storage facilities increases the risk of cancers for those living there. For all its faults, the US government does not directly control scientific research activity in universities (Trump is trying to change that) and powerful legal companies regularly expose health risks posed by industry, on behalf of clients they can make a great deal of money out of representing. In other parts of Europe too, the nuclear industry is often exposed by higher education researchers apparently free of industry/government threats to their futures.

This research, above, is published in a very high-status medical research journal and must be taken seriously in the light of Scotland’s vulnerable position, only a few miles downstream and downwind of the largest and most toxic nuclear waste site in Europe.

  1. And news out today …..

The debate over new nuclear facilities in Scotland? Read this and then just think – MIDGES!

A NEST of radioactive wasps has been discovered at a nuclear facility in the US, according to a public government report. Startled officials found that the nest clocked in at 100,000dpm, a moderately high radiation level. After being discovered on 3 July, the nest has since been sprayed and bagged as radiological waste to be destroyed. ( info from Independence Live)

  2. I suggest most of the UK public recognise the dangers of allowing Westminster politicians to dictate their choice of power generation, some still probably grimace at recollection of “so clean, plentiful and cheap it’s not worth billing for”, and memories of how to defend your family in event of nuclear war – Whitewash all the windows, unscrew an inside door, whitewash it, and hide the entire family behind in under 4 minutes and you can still ask somebody else to kiss your arse goodbye…

The State of a Secretary for Greggs and Shank’s pony don’t give a shit about Scots any more than the Russians, or the equivalent of SoSS Greggs and Shanks’s pony did in the 1950s “Cold War” ‘crisis’, it’s the ‘Empire*’ that matters….
