English water boards typically release harmful pollution between 47 (4.7 pro rata) and 76 (7.6 pro rata) times as frequently as Scottish Water

Professor John Robertson OBA

From BBC Science & Environment today, the above and:

Serious pollution incidents by water companies have risen 60% in a year, according to the Environment Agency. In total there were 2,801 pollution incidents in England in 2024, the highest on record, compared with 2,174 in 2023. Of these, 75 were considered to pose “serious or persistent” harm to fisheries, drinking water and human health – up from 47 last year.

‘Serious’ incidents such as these in Scotland are apparent from the imposition of fines on Scottish Water or other users, by the regulator Sepa.

In 2023 and 2024, there were none in Scotland.

in 2022, there was one:

Scottish Water has been served a civil penalty of £6,000 by Scotland’s environmental regulator for breaching a condition of their licence after a discharge of untreated sewage caused pollution of the Crossford Burn in Dunfermline.

In 2025, there has been one so far:

Three Glasgow drycleaning businesses have been served with civil penalties totalling £9,898.34 by Scotland’s environmental regulator for operating without a Pollution Prevention and Control Permit.

    1. You obviously mean England. I don’t suppose the people there have a choice, their water was sold off, it’s unregulated and they have sh*t being dumped into rivers and around their coastline.

  1. ” Serious pollution incidents by water companies have risen 60% in a year, according to the Environment Agency ” is a blatant lie – The NUMBER of serious pollution incidents RECORDED in England and RECOGNISED by Government Ministries have ” risen 60% in a year “, as they’re feeding the bad news through a little bit at a time…

This is the EA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environment_Agency – Note the ” established in 1996 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England (and until 2013 also Wales). ” – Now look up who the Environment Ministers were from the 2010s, yep even the lettuce.

There is no comparison between how the Scottish system has operated and that in England, SEPA have hidden nothing for 15+ years….
