Only in Scotland, unpaid carers will be over £4,400 better off than in rest of UK but BBC Scotland ignore that and the Herald find an unreliable survey to cast some gloom instead

From Scotland’s unpaid carers over £4,400 better off published yesterday:

This Carers Week (9 – 15 June), unpaid carers across Scotland are being encouraged to find out if they are eligible for social security support – through Carer Support Payment, Carer’s Allowance Supplement and Young Carer Grant.

Carer’s Allowance Supplement – a payment only available north of the border – was the first benefit delivered by Social Security Scotland in 2018 to provide extra financial support for carers, recognising their important contribution.

Since the payment’s introduction, unpaid carers in Scotland will be up to £4,475 better off by the end of 2025

As far as I can see, only the Record has covered this but with a grudging headline – People providing care for family or friends urged to check for £333 monthly payment

The previous day, the Herald, true to form, had found instead:

Unpaid carers in Scotland are being ‘penalised’ by an underfunded care system as more than a third reported worsening mental health problems. Scottish ministers have been warned the NHS and social care systems would collapse without the 716,260 current unpaid carers in Scotland.

and:

Do we think they’ll update their gloomy report based on a survey, in the light of the good news on the extra £4 475, only in Scotland?

  1. BritNat rags, I abhor their lies and propaganda. As an unpaid carer, it’s not easy, it’s no picnic in the park, with sleepless nights, and constant worry about family member(s), but the Scottish government do help, a bit, and it’s very welcome, a few extra £’s to buy a wee treat, or some essential items.

The main concern is the EngUKGovs’ cuts to ‘Universal credit’ (notice they call it ‘credit’) and their utter disregard for carers in fact. Carers ‘allowance’ now changed to Carer support payment in Scotland, is only awarded for a ‘minimum’ of thirty five hours of care per week, is whopping £2.37 per hour. Most carers will be putting in many more hours than that, hence ‘unpaid’.

The other concern are the care services available, because a lot of the care workers are from abroad and many are studying, so Starmer’s plan to do a tRump on ‘immigrants’ etc is already having an effect and of course, England’s Brexit has meant care workers from the EU have all but vanished. The other concern is BritNat councils, making cuts to services when they waste money on unecessary roadworks etc.

In Edinburgh the BritNat Labour/Tory/Libdem council, having spent the past three years, since they took control of the council (against the voters’ preference) leaving the city looking like a third world, poor rubbish strewn downtown ghetto, with graffiti on historic sites etc.

Well now they have some fancy big signs placed around the city, asking folks what sort of clean up they like to see because they are going to do some cleaning! I wonder when the next election might be, hmm. I wonder if they’ll also replace the (publicly owned) essential bus routes that they scrapped as soon as they took control of the council in 2022…hmm.

Anyway the biggest concern is the disgraceful cuts to ‘benefits’ by the English government, carers will need to get the plates spinning even more to make ends not meet. Now that the English government are almost at war..who knows, carers and the cared for will be the least of their priorities.

    Sorry long comment.

  2. In answer to your ultimate question, nope…

With successive UK governments over the last 45 years squeezing public funding, earnings and private assets, it was inevitable those doing the caring were going to be squeezed more than most in the ‘me me me’ culture being promoted.

The McCurdy ‘Exclusive’ https://archive.ph/orKmi plays with the big numbers, percentages and Director quotes in the rush to put out a negative over the passing of the Holyrood ‘Care Reform Bill’, but neer a word on the ‘from the cradle to the grave’ pride of Britain created in the aftermath of war, only to be systematically destroyed decades later by the resurgent asset-stripping few.
