Despite mass media misrepresentation most Scots still do not support new nuclear power stations

In the last few months, we’ve seen the MSM in Scotland support the Labour Party’s plans, across the UK and in Scotland, to build new nuclear power stations. Coverage has largely ignored the international research pointing to massive real costs, increased waste and health risks, as well as Scotland’s zero need for nuclear power as new windfarms and battery farms have us on the brink of full sufficiency and security.

YouGov today, however, are headlining majority support for new nuclear at around 55% across England, 58% in the South of England. Looking closer, the figure for Scotland and Wales is only 48%.

The Scottish figure may have been over-stated if YouGov have employed their usual sampling methods to exaggerate Labour and reduce SNP support in the sample.

HMS James Cook has no less than 3 articles following similar themes on it’s main webpage, “Acorn Project funding to be announced in spending review”, “Scotland’s emission cuts ‘too slow’ despite fall” and the State of a Secretary for Greggs’ “Scotland to prioritise renewable energy over nuclear power” https://archive.ph/jm6dn – Scotland still can’t export what it already CAN produce….

    Southern England desperately needs more power generation whilst the Scots and Welsh can almost swim in the stuff as well as the water….

    Lord only knows how the ‘YouGov poll’ got those figures, I can’t imagine any wanting nuclear in their back-yard anywhere in the UK….

  3. Dubious forces already promoting this on twitter/X- with unsupported assertions re. the smr’s, rolls-royce, + the usual jobs for Scotland line punted by Starmrs mob- some of this by ostensibly Indy supporters…

  4. We currently prioritise and pay a premium because of gas generating electricity else where. Gas sets the price for a unit which is way above renewable generated.

    We will have to pay a premium for any new nuclear also.

    Bizarrely free/cheap electricity is switched off when baseload is needed whilst you cannot turn off a nuclear reactor!

Gas generation will continue to be required as standby, but it’s role as 24 hour standby and grid stability is fast diminishing, as this recent podcast rather nicely highlighted…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOoRRMblD – The interviewee Ed Porter highlighted umpteen problems on the inspection/verification and grid side of the rollout – It’s not the facility which is the problem but a shortage of qualified engineers to sign it off and get it working, with delays of 6 months plus.

      However, when you consider WHERE a deficit of energy prevails, it’s NOT in Scotland or Wales or even the midlands of England, it’s in the South – There is no justification whatever for nuclear to be built in Scotland to sate a shortage of power over 400 miles away via a grid throttled at Carlisle – It is bluntly a political charade as cover for the much anticipated power blackouts in southern england, the ‘Blame the Scots’ for Westminster myopia game….

      Power generation in Scotland is not the problem, historic under-investment in the grid IS, which is a reserved matter – There was a podcast by Lesley Riddoch a week or so back highlighting the travails of folks in Applecross over energy, a ridiculous situation replicated across Scotland.

  6. If any of this comes to Scotland I should imagine Labour will try to ‘sell’ it as a ‘replacement’ for Grangemouth by way of investment/jobs.

  7. Well England has to store its increasing pile of nuclear waste somewhere. What better place than Scotland?

    So, if we just keep lying on how popular new nuclear power stations will be in Scotland, we can then force one or two new stations on them for the good of the hard working proud Scots.

    The new stations can then supply power to the north of England and also, we can store more of the Great British nuclear waste in Scotland.

  8. Total waste of money. UK Gov spending £13Billion a year decommissioning nuclear. Hickley Point years late and over budget. £Billions wasted.

    Labour cancelled two tidal projects (Humber). £10Billion each. Much cheaper and safer than nuclear.

    Tories reneged on Gas CC at Peterhead. A coal CC project at Longannet in Fife. Scotland is covered in coal.

    Scotland is the best place for renewables. Wind, wave and solar. Hydro.
