For Heaven’s sake just fix the leaks in the South-East where they have less water than Syria should be the ‘Scottish’ Daily Mail’s message

Professor John Robertson OBA

The SDM today has For Heaven’s sake just fix the leaks! front page.

I’m not arguing against the idea of fixing leaks but it’s worth getting the figures in perspective. Perspective? The Mail? Yes, I know.

What is that perspective?

Covering about 2% of Scotland’s land area, our rivers and lochs contain 90% of the UK’s surface freshwater.

Why is it so important to plug all the leaks in some other parts of the UK?

One of the biggest challenges facing the water supply network in the UK is ensuring that supplies do not run out. Population density in the south east means that there is less water available per person than in desert states such as Syria and Sudan.

Climate change threatens to reduce supplies even further by bringing longer, hotter summers to the UK, resulting in more drought. An increasing population will further stretch resources, leading to fears that taps could run dry by 2050.

  1. The colonial media in Scotland, starting with the Anglo-British BBC and moving on to all the foreign owned and controlled press gang.

Gaslight the “Jocks”. Blame the “Nats”. No context, no perspective. No journalism. Only lies, news management, subjugation and manipulation.

This is what we signed up for in 2014.

    1. ‘Gaslight the “Jocks”:

Source: Perkins and Jason (2024) Gaslighting in Politics Causes More Harm Than Many Realize. Psychology Today (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-mental-health-revolution/202410/gaslighting-in-politics-causes-more-harm-than-many-realize )

‘Gaslighting in politics can distort our understanding of national unity.’ – ‘It can undermine confidence, causing people to question their own beliefs, values, and experiences.’

‘The effects can be particularly harmful when those carrying out gaslighting hold positions of power …’ – presumably including media power?

‘Such abuse in politics can lead to significant and often lasting damage to societies, creating confusion and lowering confidence. Essential beliefs can be altered, like the idea of a fair world, making it difficult to challenge misleading narratives. This widespread manipulation can erode the public’s ability to evaluate policies on critical issues, blurring the lines between genuine concern for citizens and misleading rhetoric.’

And the authors add: ‘Credible news organizations can play a vital role by providing fact-checked reporting and in-depth analysis to help the public navigate complex issues. They can serve as a safeguard against misinformation by highlighting the importance of evidence-based journalism and supporting media literacy among their audiences.‘ – to ‘dream the impossible dream’ in Scotland?

  2. Ah, so JOHN PAUL BRESLIN is the latest to be drafted in to provide smokescreen for England’s water woes https://archive.ph/VFpWl courtesy of Douglas Lumsden, Scottish Conservative energy and net zero spokesman, that bast… of democracy at Holyrood – Most know Douglas’s knowledge of water as limited to how out of his depth he is in any puddle, a fairly frequent viewing experience for many I suggest.

To paraphrase one of Douglas Lumsden’s quotes, “However, none should expect Scots to cut down given they are losing £118,076 every year in staff costs on top of Douglas’s £72,196 salary, simply to provide sufficient pish to fill 200 swimming pools, which people will see as completely hypocritical ” – Even ACH-him and Dam ‘tsunami’ Baillie get a rent-a-quote to provide more pish.

Southern England is running dry because HMG didn’t heed warnings from engineers 50 odd years ago that southern England would run out of water and electrical power – Yet Scots are supposed to feel guilty over a few brave souls derailing plans to privatise water in Scotland many moons ago.

In context, SE England’s water is screwed no matter how many leaks they repair, if Scots run short they can cut back from something.

  3. London water recycled 8 times.

Scotland has the best water in the world.

Other countries have to buy containers of drinking water.
