Unions representing 350 000+ health workers call on Australian government to drop nuclear plans casting further doubt on UK Labour’s plans for Scotland

From Medianet today:

CANBERRA WEDNESDAY 30 April, 2025 – Organisations representing over 350,000 emergency services workers have today called on Peter Dutton and the Coalition to drop their nuclear energy plan.

The letter, signed by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, Emergency Leaders for Climate Action, Climate Action Nurses, Climate and Health Alliance, Doctors for the Environment Australia, and the United Firefighters Union of Australia  highlights the collective expertise of frontline responders in assessing the risks posed by nuclear energy, and declares that Australia’s current emergency services do not have the support or resources to respond to nuclear disasters.

Annie Butler, Federal Secretary of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation said:

“We are concerned for the impact that the proposed nuclear plants will have on the health of all people, but particularly nurses, midwives and carers.

What we are still yet to see are detailed health risk assessments including how the health of nurses, midwives, carers and the community will be protected. This is crucial  before any nuclear energy developments proceed.”

  1. The ‘Tony Blair Institute’ is claiming ‘net zero’ is an illusion. The world needs to use more fossil fuels and hugely increase nuclear energy generation. The argument is more nuanced, but it is a strong push for a huge increase in nuclear energy generation.

  2. Alasdair, Tony Blair probably has large financial interests in or pay from nuclear companies, so he’s just toeing the lie and increasing his money.

  4. Oz has gone weird politically of late over nuclear, but you’d need to understand how far solar has gotten a foothold to appreciate it – Solar has long been a big thing in Oz, but recent changes to legislation have seen a spike in ‘community batteries’ at substations on local grids and everybody has piled in such that the nuclear lobby are losing credibility.

A parallel might be the State of a Secretary for Scotland (Greggs) trying to punt SMRs as essential to ‘national energy security’ despite knowing full well the only fuel is from Russia.

‘Peter Dutton’ is pissing off Aussies same as Ed Millipede in the UK – Their nuclear ambitions don’t stand scrutiny given the options of burgeoning renewables and clear headed cost advantages with no legacy issues…
