Professor John Robertson OBA
In the Guardian today, the above, and:
Overworked police lack the resources, time and experience to investigate crimes properly, leading to victims being failed and an erosion in faith in law enforcement, an official report has found.
The report by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) says that the rate of positive outcomes – when police identify a suspect and they face justice – has crashed from 25% in England and Wales a decade ago to 11% in 2024.
Predictably, when I see that kind of thing, then like a tennis beginner frantically whacking returns back at one of those robot serving machines, I think how can I quickly talk Scotland up on this as part of my daily regime to counter the sickly narratives in Reporting Scotland Down, Good Mourning Scotland, Not O Kaye Adams and our lovely (sic) newspapers.
So, click on these for full details.
First, is crime still being solved up here?
It is, so why?
Scotland – 316 officers per 100 000 people. England – 228. So, Scotland is 27.8% better staffed.

The problem we have in Scotland is persuading people, like my daughter in law, that the news she reads in the Sun and hears on BBC Scotland doesn’t always apply to Scotland.
They bought their council flat in a very nice area with great neighbours who, through the years have been replaced with problem families and a couple of addicts. This had led to her firm belief that Scotland is going straight to hell and it’s difficult to persuade her otherwise when they are now stuck with a nice top floor flat that nobody wants to buy.
She is firmly convinced that the welfare system is cooshy and supports people who could work but just don’t (even though she doesn’t truly know their circumstances). Her evidence is that the parents can both afford to smoke and drink, buy toys that remain strewn all over and home multiple pets they don’t look after properly. She’s also scathing about the police who do nothing to halt the anti social behaviour (late, loud music, arguments etc).
I have to say that when I visit and see the downside of a once desirable property – entrance littered with stuff nobody bothers to recycle or dump – it would be pretty easy to agree with her.

Westminster Gov puts people into poverty. An Independent Scotland would have more equality, cohesion and a better economy. There would be less poverty and deprived areas, keeping living standards up.
Some people could rent out their property and rent in a different area. Until prices increased enough to sell. Or sell up and move but add a bit more on. To get a reasonable property.

The Police spend too much money on malicious complaint. Then go to Court without a proper investigation. Rangers fiasco. Alex Salmond ‘trial’. Campervan. So much time and money wasted. Not properly investigated.
