Latest – Scotland produces enough renewable electricity to meet all its needs and then power 1.4 million homes in the rest of the UK

Professor John Robertson OBA

From Energy Statistics for Scotland – Q4 2024, published today

A record 38.4 TWh of renewable electricity was generated in Scotland in 2024 – a 13.2% increase compared from 33.9 TWh in 2023. Scotland continues to generate more electricity than it needs. In 2024, there was 19.7 TWh of net electricity exports to other UK nations.1

Scotland’s electricity consumption has been falling since 2007, from 17 TWh to only 14TwH in 2022.2

What does that 19.7TWh do for the rest of the UK?

1 TWh can fully power 70 000 homes for a year3 so that 19.7 will do around 1.4 million homes if the rest of the UK.

More food than we can eat, more gas and electricity than wee need, more trees than we can use, more oil than we use, better hospitals, better schools, more doctors and nurses and far less crime….stop me…..drug deaths, ferries!

  1. Yes but, John, Scotland’s electricity transfers to England are worth more than £3 billion. You said so yourself. What on earth would we do with £3 billion?

I’m relieved nobody has found rare earths in Scotland – yet. We’re doomed enough as it is.

  2. I seem to recall domestic was 34% of UK power consumption, but never did find out what the breakdown was by nation or how switching from gas to the leccy would affect it, but forever bugging me was the waste through lack of insulation.

In the most recent “Lesley Riddoch podcast”, she was waxing lyrical about wind farm leases running out and becoming available for community buyout, the travails of those communities considering it revealed a stacked deck favouring those with ‘previous experience’ (yep that old chestnut) by the Forestry as I still refer to them, and the bizarre scenario of the grid being too crap to take the 400% increase in output 30 odd years later for the smallest machine available.

Going back to your point over what is “generated” by way of renewables, do we have the faintest idea of actual production capacity as opposed to what political charlatans in the palaces of Westminster will allow through ?

The only reason I suspect we’re seeing any increases at all is the old SSEB having the smarts to make their most recent Shetland project dependant on the HVDC cable solution down the east coast being laid to the environmental scandal which has long been Drax.

And the State of a Secretary for Scotland will still be punting SMRs for ‘energy security’ reasons knowing full bloody well Russia is the only source of their fuel as he swallows yet another Greggs pie, and one of his spads calculates how many more wind gennies need to be switched off..

  3. Yet Scotland pays a higher cost for fuel and energy. No parity. An absolute disgrace.

Scotland in surplus in fuel and energy and nearer the source pays more because of Westminster policies.

Westminster pays £13Billion a year to decommission nuclear. Ever increasing but wants to build more. Trident dumped in Scotland. A danger. A total waste of time and money. Westminster increasing military spending. Cutting welfare. They would rather kill people than save them.
