Professor John Robertson OBA, former schoolteacher, Education lecturer, researcher and Associate Dean for Quality Assurance

From Teacher census supplementary statistics1, published yesterday, the ratio of pupils to teachers in Scottish schools, in 2024, was:

  • Average – 13.3 pupils for every teacher
  • Primary – 15.8
  • Secondary – 12.6
  • Special – 3.7

How does this compare with other parts of the UK?

In Northern Ireland (17.4), England (18.1), and Wales (18.6).2

These are marked differences suggesting a very different experience for pupils and teachers in Scotland and it works. Don’t let the inexpert but loud tell you otherwise. Get some facts here:

Footnote – Why don’t I defend these facts on the BBC or STV? They’re never going to ask me.

  1. John , a simple action WILL get you invited on to the BBC /STV to diss-cuss Scottish education ( the emphasis on diss ! ).

You need only call yourself Lindsay Paterson or Alison Payne – and you will receive a season ticket to undermine ( usually by omission ) our Schools .

Or . alternatively , you could emphasise the negative aspects of Scotland’s Education instead of your unacceptable habit ( to Them ) of accentuating the Positive ! Then you’ll even be welcomed at their Xmas parties
