Spare us the shoddy journalism: Scotland got Covid quite a bit better

Professor John Robertson OBA

Former Tory Spad, Andy Maciver, is in the Herald today with the above, and:

Largely ineffective? Oh, really? A 36% lower death rate than the UK, saving nearly 2 000 lives?

The above table from the UK Covid Inquiry report, posted today by https://x.com/ammacj makes clear that Scotland had a 14% lower Covid death rate than UK and a 36% lower excess death rate than UK.

The second table, above, make clear the scale of loss not at first apparent in percentages. Had Scotland’s pandemic response strategy been managed by the UK Tory government, 14%, 1 867, more might have died,

  1. The stewards are furiously rewriting the SG’s management of COVID under Nicola Sturgeon to make out we were all sh*t in it together.

No we most certainly were not.

The sheer amount of gaslighting going on by unionists is despicable.

Thank you Ms Sturgeon for doing your very best to guide us through those strange times.

  2. Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock and Rishi Sunak got things seriously, possibly criminally wrong with the connivance of the right wing media and the inhospitality industry. The three devolved nations were prevented from acting sooner as they had wanted to do but did not have the powers nor the devolved finance to introduce actions sooner.

And, even when such powers were given, because of the lack of confidence of people in England in the government due to the ‘Downing Street parties’ the adherence to guidelines that there was in Scotland, for, example, was undermined by travellers to and from England, not least of care home staff on zero hours contracts.

  3. Scotland did better than England despite the ”messages” about Covid rules being muddled and misreported by the UK MSM , as they often reported English rules as UK rules to the detriment of the clearer rules being advocated by Scotland’s Government .

Scotland was also subject to all the conflicting messages broadcast UK-wide by Boris Johnson while the English were denied the more grounded messaging from Nicola Sturgeon .
