Assaults on police officers fall in Scotland but climb to 20% higher in England & Wales

Professor John Robertson OBA

From Freedom of Information request 25-0083 Officer/ Staff assault – related absence/ hospital treatment – 2022/23 TD – asking:

In the financial years 2022/23, 23/24, and 24/25 (Up to 08.01.25), how many officers, PCSOs and support staff were physically assaulted by members of the public? Please provide a breakdown by role.

we can see that the total fell from 4 670 to 4 328 and fell from 133 to 126 for Police Staff. The figures for Probationers and Special Constables were too small to be meaningful.

For the question – Of those who were assaulted, how many required hospital treatment as a result of their injuries? Please provide a breakdown by role for the same financial years.

we can see quite a significant fall from 228 to 193. The figures for Probationers and Special Constables were too small to be meaningful.

With 11 times the population, you might expect England & Wales to have had around 47 000 cases but according to the Police Federation, in England and Wales, there were 55 954 assaults on police officers in 2024, 9 000 or a very significant, 19.1%, more.

  1. Apologies for off topic but thought your other readers might be interested in this from BBS Scotland last night (Sunday). Normally would flick thro’ this channel but the title caught my eye for once. It was a documentary on Mhairi Black a young women who I’m sure inspired many (especially younger ones) to join the SNP and while she may have been a bit rough round the edges and inexperienced for some many thought including myself she would go on to bigger things.

Sadly it appears the pressures and boredom of Westminster life proved too much and sadly decided to leave Party politics. However from a personal view which I’m sure is echoed by many in the SNP the hope is she will return to front line politics as we desperately need her raw and refreshing view of life to attract a new recruits.
