How Shelter Scotland politicises homelessness even though it is 50% more common in England

Notice the differences in reporting by Shelter in Scotland and in England.

For Scotland, they use “ national scandal” and “children trapped” but frame it differently for England.

Notice the numbers too, in Scotland 10,360 children living in temporary accommodation, which is I agree way way too high. In England 151,000 children living in temporary accommodation. With England having ten times the population of Scotland the figure should be roughly 103,600 but there are 47,400 [almost 50%] more children in England living in temporary accommodation. All of these figures are a disgrace. No child in either country should have to live this way but they really need to show all the facts and figures before condemning just one government.

  1. Indeed! I have complained on more than one occasion on their Facebook pages about the difference in tone between Shelter Scotland and Shelter UK. I was particularly enraged by their ‘Rage’ campaign – as were many many others. Their response was sadly as I hoped it wouldn’t be. Having been donating almost all of our charitable giving – cash, and donations to their shops – for around 6 years, I’ve stopped. Yes, homelessness is a shameful scourge on society but the Scottish campaigns are significantly politicised in a way that they are not for the rest of the UK.

  2. Shelter ‘Scotland’ are registered in London, England. Does that mean money spent in Scotland via their shops and donations, doesn’t stay in Scotland, most likely yes. Same with many charities, but Shelter’s political bias against Scotland and the Scottish government is disgraceful and makes you wonder what their agenda is. Perhaps in an independent Scotland they won’t be needed as much, wonder if it’s poss to find out how much they do take in £’s within Scotland, compared to England…

It is impossible to split their accounts as although Shelter Scotland are actually a registered charity in Scotland, charity number SC0002327,  Shelter Scotland’s correct title is just merely, “Scotland Committee” with the Chair of that committee being Kezia Dugdale. Their overall correct name is “Shelter, the National Campaign for Homeless People Limited” and is run from England with their board of directors being based in England, therefore highly politicised against the SNP Scottish Government.

    32%.       30%.          Had dependants

    So Scotland performing better than England should maybe be their headline.
