As energy prices set to rise, the tragic irony of Scotland – 8% of the population but 48% of the UK’s wind energy and a massive transfer of 6.1 TWh electricity to the rest of the UK

From the Guardian on January 3rd 2025:

UK electricity cleanest ever in 2024, with record 58% from low-carbon sources – UK has more than halved amount of electricity generated from fossil fuels but gas still had largest share at 28% https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/02/uk-electricity-cleanest-ever-in-2024-with-record-58-from-low-carbon-sources

There’s no mention of Scotland’s contribution to this:

Scotland powers nearly half of UK’s wind energy milestone. Scotland’s wind farms are generating 48% of the UK’s 30GW wind power capacity, with new projects pushing this total higher. https://www.energylivenews.com/2024/08/30/scotland-powers-nearly-half-of-uks-wind-energy-milestone/

Net electricity transfers from Scotland to England [in 2023] increased 15 per cent to 6.0 TWh year-on-year, with transfers from Scotland to England increasing by 14 per cent to 6.1 TWh while transfers from England to Scotland decreased to 0.1 TWh. Net transfers from Scotland to Northern Ireland more than doubled to 0.5 TWh compared with Quarter 1 2023, which was mainly transfers from Scotland to Northern Ireland, with only a small amount of electricity transferred from Northern Ireland to Scotland. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/66a523860808eaf43b50d83d/ET_5.6_JUL_24.xlsx#:~:text=Net%20electricity%20transfers%20from%20Scotland,Scotland%20decreased%20to%200.1%20TWh.

Scotland has 8% of the UK population.

    1. Yep, Scotland has so been scammed to the tune of literally £trillions, it’s absolutely tragic.

The Eng/Scot/BritNats are not daft, they kept Scotland shackled for well, centuries, then under pressure allowed Scotland to have their wee parliament back, with huge restrictions and making sure that England could keep taking Scotland wealth and resources, sending a few crumbs back, with added ridicule and a message of be grateful sweaty lazy jocks!

It’s a mafia style of ‘union’, many in England and unfortunately in Scotland, actually believe that Scotland would be a complete basket case with out the country next door sending tons of cash out of such grand generosity, so philanthropic, it’s hard to believe. That’s because it’s a massive con, a scam, but try telling the folks who just can’t bring themselves to see the wood for the trees, in Scotland but also in England. My friends and family in NE England do not want to know how much they depend on Scotland to keep their lights on, facts being a tad thin on the ground and not accepted when shown them.

Just as an aside I have seen a couple of ‘Scottish’ Youtube channels lately, quite a lot of views, pro union pro BritNat parties. At least where the anti Scottish, anti Scotland comments were very disturbing in number and nature.
I’ll keep any eye on that, they have quite big followers!

  1. Yes, but this ignores the fact that nearly all of our energy is in private corporate and foreign government hands, thanks to the insanity of privatising public services. The UK is the only country in Europe that has a fully privatised electricity transmission and distribution system, which is why our prices are the highest. Plus, the UK’s marginal cost pricing model means prices are set based on the cost of the most expensive fuel needed to meet demand at any time, which is natural gas. Completely bonkers.

  2. And, the ‘Scottish’ Labour Party wants Scotland to ‘have its share’ of the proposed new small nuclear power stations.

It is worth considering the meaning of the concept of ‘having its share’. Does it mean a ‘union dividend’ of getting approximately 10% of the proposed stations and the associated employment? Does it mean that since nuclear power stations are associated with increased health risks in the vicinity that Scottish people should take their share of increased ill-health? Does it mean that since nuclear power station construction will be a gravy train for a few investors that “Scottish” Labour people want their share of profits?

The issue of supply of energy, such as by renewables does not figure in the chunterings of the noble lords and ladies such as ffor-fffoulkes-sake and Curran.
