Worried about your child at University? Everywhere across the UK is more dangerous, often much more so, than anywhere in Scotland, including Oxford and Cambridge

The Talking-up Scotland fund raiser primarily to enable the recruitment of some research assistance, in order to take pressure off me [74 in June and tiring] and hopefully to further improve the blog, has made a good start. To contribute, only if you can (!) go to: Talking-up Scotland - a Politics crowdfunding project in Ayr by Professor John Robertson

I did this years ago and have been meaning to do it again. From the Complete University Guide – How safe is your city? published in March 2024, the above table, shows the number of offences per 1 000 people in Scotland’s university towns and cities, in 2023.

Looking at the column that would most concern me as a parent – violence against the person with injury, you’ll see it ranges from 0.5 per 1 000 in Stirling [my place] to 1.2 in Glasgow [my daughter’s place].

How does this compare?

In Belfast 12.8 per 1 000! 10 times more dangerous than Glasgow.

In Swansea and Cardiff, both 9 per 1 000. 8 times more dangerous than Glasgow.

Across England, from the lowest, 5.8 in Bath to 17(!) in Leicester. 15 times more dangerous than Glasgow. 30 campuses above 10 per 1 000.

Oxford 8.6 and Cambridge 6.6.

  3. Young people often leave their stuff lying around. Young males 18 to 24 commit the most violent crime. The age of many students. A higher % committing crime under the influence of drink or drugs?
