Massive recent research study finds significantly higher risks for ALL cancers, especially among the under-5s, in those living less than 20 miles from nuclear power stations to show Scottish Labour’s support for them as a betrayal

By Professor John Robertson OBA, former Faculty Research Ethics Chair, UWS

Prompted by current controversy over the new Australian government’s plans for new nuclear power stations and warnings from doctors there of the huge health risks, I’ve had a look at the main research study being used by critics – Health Effects of Occupational and Environmental Exposures to Nuclear Power Plants: A Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression in Current Environmental Health Reports, 18 June 2024.

Using 30km (18m) as as the defined distance for ‘local residency’, the researchers found:

We identified 47 studies, 13 with worker and 34 with resident samples, covering 175 nuclear power plants from 17 countries, encompassing samples of 480,623 workers and 7,530,886 residents…..Residents had significantly higher risks for all-cancer, thyroid cancer, and leukemia. Notably, children under 5 years old showed the highest risk for all-cancer.

There’s more detail in the full report (link below) but remember the onus is not upon us to prove nuclear power stations are dangerous but upon them to prove they are not.

Scottish Labour’s supine manner with their UK bosses on this tells you all you need to know about them.

  1. Just thought I would throw this one into the debate next time anyone voices concerns about delayed and overpriced ferries and the desperate need for the SNP to abandon it’s opposition to Nuclear energy.

    1. What I suspect terrifies folks most over nuclear uk wide is HMG’s blatant history of lying to the public, ‘so cheap to produce energy it isn’t worth billing for’ was at least one of the earlier scams which left a bitter taste for consumers in the 1960s.

Radioactive mutton from Galloway hills sheep was another PR exercise blamed on radioactive granite, then handily Chernobyl came along, yet not a cheep on the Winscale/Sellafield effect – 3 eyed and spineless fish down our coastline years before Nigel Farage appeared, served as reminder of the chicanery from what have predominantly but not exclusively been Tory governments…

  2. Never mind nuclear risk to health , the present incarnation of Labour is a major health threat with its policies of hitting the most vulnerable in society in order to placate their rich donors !

The only antidote to this deadly affliction is independence !

  5. The Labor Australian Government has no plans to build nuclear power stations. This is the policy of the conservative Liberal ( in name only) opposition
