This morning, BBC Reporting Scotland Down has a scare story interview with the Governor of Barlinnie prison [above] on overcrowding and the latest Scottish Parliament law on early prisoner release. The underlying message is ‘danger.’ It’s the kind of tale they love to tell.
Here’s something interesting and maybe a little reassuring that neither they nor the Governor want their predominantly ‘mature’, non-SNP voting, viewers knowing.
Prisoner reconviction rates, like suicide, abortion, stillbirth, infant mortality and drug deaths represent a window into the wider success of a government over the longer term. In Scotland, all have been falling since the SNP came to power. The partial exception, drug deaths, have stalled as the country faces a spreading plague of English County Lines drug gangs bringing violence and more frequent overdoses resulting from cheaper and more deadly drug supplies.
In 2008/2009, there were 0.6 reconvictions per offender, on average.
By 2020/2021 (latest figures) there were 0.44, a 27% reduction.

A new prison is being built. The prisons are falling down. In a terrible state. UK has one of the highest prison population in Europe. More proper rehab facilities are needed. The Scottish Gov are funding proper rehab facilities £250million over five years. 200 women in prison. Most of them should not be there. 7,000 men.
People with mental health issues are being released from mental institutions without proper supervision. They should be kept safe in hospital. They can harm others by not taking their medication.
One person with mental health issues was not given medication because they did not like needles. They were sent home supposed to be under daily supervision to take their medication. Someone called for two days. They murdered three people. They were not adequately supervised or kept in hospital.
