Research from USA reveals ‘eye-popping’ new costs for small nuclear reactors favoured by Labour

By Professor John Robertson OBA

Thanks to JB for alerting me to this:

From the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial analysis in January 2023, based on a US (Utah) energy company’s updated projections, the above chart and:

As recently as mid-2021, the target price for power was pegged at $58 per megawatt-hour (MWh); it’s risen to $89/MWh, a 53% increase. The price would be much higher without $4 billion federal tax subsidies that include a $1.4 billion U.S. Department of Energy contribution and a $30/MWh break from the Inflation Reduction Act. The higher target price is due to a 75% increase in the estimated construction cost for the project, from $5.3 to $9.3 billion dollars.

£7.5bn for a wee, less than 500MW power station?

Never mind the proven higher dangerous emissions level and greater waste production, per MW/h output, Labour’s policy looks like a a massive green elephant.

  1. “Scottish” Labour just doing London’s bidding as always.

Why doesnt “thousands o’ jobs” Sarwar insist on a Scottish share of the available NUKE moneys, and opt to invest in tidal? Jobs for Scots in Scotland (with export potential) no good?

Answer? Sarwar is just a stooge, with Starmer on one shoulder and Baillie on the other.

  2. So few SMRs have been built that there is no information available that justifies the many claims being made about their cost, in fact the indications are that these that have been built have cost proportionately as much as any other nuclear power station.

Scotland doesn’t need these stations, especially when the predictable tides and tidal streams around its shores have not yet been harnessed to contribute to our energy mix.

We should be exploring the use of hydrogen to replace oil and gas for transport, heating and electricity generation as Scotland has a plentiful supply of wind, water and tides that could be used to produce stored hydrogen as well as power pump storage systems and charge grid balancing batteries.

We need independence to change the emphasis on investment from instant corporate profits for the few to long term life enhancing benefits for everyone.

  3. Incredibly stupid. There is nowhere to put the waste. Too expensive and costly compared to other sources. Labour at its worst.

Trident dumped in Scotland putting Scotland in danger. Waste dumped in Scotland without permission. Wasting £Billions. Westminster Gov spending £13Billion a year on decommissioning nuclear. Rising all the time.
