Factcheck – Scotland a richer employment environment for 16 to 24 year-olds

From Labour Market Statistics for 16 to 24 year olds: Scotland and the United Kingdom – October 2023 to September 2024, published today:

Compared with the United Kingdom as a whole:

  • the estimated employment rate for 16 to 24 year olds in Scotland was higher (55.9 per cent compared to 52.0 per cent)
  • the estimated unemployment rate for 16 to 24 year olds in Scotland was lower (10.4 per cent compared to 11.4 per cent)
  • the estimated inactivity rate for 16 to 24 year olds in Scotland was lower (37.6 per cent compared to 41.3 per cent)

Data are sourced from the Annual Population Survey (APS), first released on 11 December 2024 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

  1. Scottish unemployment rate falling. 3.8%. Youth unemployment 100,000. Low people changing jobs etc. Or sick. Neurodiverse need more help.

  2. However gratifying these figures may be compared to England, they’re not exactly miles away either… Now compare with the 1970s, B&W rather than sepia memories…

    eg – For my first qualified job in that age group I spent a week in Falkland Youth hostel, 3 months in digs in Markinch, and then was in my own brand new council flat in Glenrothes, albeit without a stick of furniture – There were possibilities in those days that today’s youth have been entirely deprived of because of the rise of the entirely bogus ‘family budget’ narrative and recurring appearance of the “can’t afford it fairy”.

    And I dare say it, SNP are walking into exactly the same trap of being confined by the economic ideology ( and I use that word correctly ) of “the books must balance”, hence GERS…

    We need to give our young hope, not just a student loan and mortgage they might clear in their eighties, that’s the London way….
