English financiers says ‘Scotland ‘subsidises’ London energy bills’ and it’s ‘better for Scots to pay over the odds than those living in the English capital’

I missed this back in October 2024:

Households in Scotland are paying higher energy bills than they ought to keep prices down south of the Border, according to experts at the Fuller Treacy Money investment strategy firm.

In a newsletter arguing against zonal pricing, the firm’s owner Eoin Treacy [above] says it is better for Scots to pay over the odds than those living in the English capital.

Zonal pricing, which has been considered by the UK Government in the past, would see places like Scotland – where lots of energy is produced but there is lower demand – pay cheaper bills, while London would pay more than they currently do.

You have to respect the transparent, if callous, honesty in this.

Further down but clearly not influencing Treacy’s thinking:

Kenny MacAskill said: “Privatisation and fragmentation have rendered the entire UK energy system dysfunctional.

“But what’s clear is that Scotland is energy rich, yet half of Scots are in fuel poverty. It’s perverse that turbines turn on land and sea, yet folk cant heat their homes.

“First it was oil and gas and now its renewables. It’s about time that Scotland and Scots benefitted from their resource. If that means zonal pricing then so be it, it’s what we’re due.”

  1. Hasn’t it always been so.

First the oil then the gas and when that was running out in English Territorial waters they simply moved the Maritime border to ensure that the vast majority of the North Sea was England’s to take for free and sell on to us ‘Dumb’ Scots. I say dumb Scots because we had that chance in 2014 to say no more. We could have made the choice to say “If you want it, you will need to pay for it” as you do with energy bought from France and The Netherlands.

Now they are doing the same with renewable energy. The ‘Nimby’s ‘down south don’t want the pylons but they need the energy so instead they pay ( not us) to install undersea cables to ‘Take’ the renewable energy directly from Scotland to Hubs in England for distribution. How much energy is transferred the other way? Not a lot as we have seen with Prof Robertson’s posts.

    What’s next?

    Water?

Boris Johnson floated an idea of building canals to transport Scotland’s clean fresh water to England because they’ll run out by 2040. Loch Ness alone has more fresh water than all the rivers and lakes in England and Wales combined. I am NOT advocating that we don’t supply England with the one thing that preserves life but at least give us something in return. Something tangible that also makes our lives better and not treat us like some food bank where you can go and get stuff for nothing. No disrespect to people who shockingly have to use food banks in what they claim as ‘The Worlds 5th richest economy’

Nuclear dumping ground for England’s radioactive waste?

There was a meeting of The Nuclear bodies in the 1970’s which came to the conclusion that the safest place to bury nuclear waste was deep in granite rock far from population centres. Caithness was decided as the perfect site. Tell that to the people of Wick or Thurso. The people of Leamington Spa and Guilford can sleep easy.

We have to get away from those people who live in ‘The London Bubble’ making decisions for us but not in our interests or our wellbeing.

Vote for Scotland’s interests, vote for ourselves.

  2. The weather is colder in Scotland. Scotland in surplus and nearer the source pays more. The energy companies would charge Scotland less. Westminster will not agree.
