‘UK has enough gas says No 10 after storage warning’ – because Scotland produces 71% of the UK total production and 8 times the amount it consumes partly because we cannot afford it

From BBC Business, minutes ago:

The UK has enough gas to meet winter demand, the government has said, after British Gas owner-Centrica warned about “concerningly low” storage. Centrica, which owns the country’s largest gas storage facility, said the UK “has less than a week of gas demand in store” due to the colder-than-usual weather. The government said it monitors energy levels and says it has “all tools” at its disposal “if needed to secure our supply”.

In 2023, Scotland produced 23 million tonnes and 71% of the total UK gas production.1

23 million tonnes of gas = 332 TWh.2

In the same year, Scotland consumed only 42.7TWh of gas.3

  1. Doesn’t it give you a nice warm glow inside to know that WE in Scotland are keeping the rest of the UK warm – even if pensioners up here can’t afford to heat their OWN homes .

      1. If Wales or Northern Ireland had them they’d be treated the same way that Scotland is now. 750 million litres of water is taken from Wales every day to supply the needs of Liverpool and Birmingham.

      2. Gas production from the North sea started in what was designated English waters, and revenue generation was designated as English only. As production moved further North beyond England’s maritime border, England’s solution was to move the maritime border, unlawfully I might add.

      3. But they don’t and, it wouldn’t and, if it was, because as we know England in particular is very generous and philanthropic towards its colonies, not, Scotland, ‘north britain’ would be charged even more for sitting in the freezer! Feeling all warm cosy and ‘united’ knowing the king of England is able to warm those castles, palaces and sheds, due to the kindness of Scotland. Awww…let’s ‘send’ more cash to England and their dear masters. Oh my it’s chilly today, get the wee tea lights lit to keep warm, again.

  2. Starmer et al don’t want to address the issue of the massive reserve facility (Can’t recall it’s name now but from memory it was an old mine in England) the Tories refused to upgrade as Boris insisted they could buy from the markets – Then the market went tits up and there was an entirely manufactured energy crisis, wha-wha-wha….

Scotland would be 100% covered if independent, unfortunately we’re still saddled by hooray-henrys in London only interested in what profits they make, not least 11 Downing Street….
