22 degrees of difference in temperature but one means-tested winter fuel allowance?

As I watched BBC Breakfast at around 7am this morning, it was minus 10 in Tulloch Bridge just south of Fort William and plus 12 at St Mary’s in the Scilly Isles yet it’s the same means tested winter fuel allowance for pensioners in both places.

Still months away from the real Scottish winter, we see the first signs of how different Scotland is from the southern parts of the UK and how important the Winter Fuel Allowance is for many here.

In a year or so, we’ll see the winter mortality data for all parts of the UK and it will be interesting to see if the media connect those directly with the removal of the allowance.

  1. Older people need to keep warm as they are more susceptible to blood clotting with cold temperatures. I wonder how this effect will be recorded in the mortality statistics?

      1. They had to money ear marked for that removed, ven with the extra money in the Barnett consequentials the Scottish govt funding is down 3b in real terms, Labour needs to reintroduce it as a matter of urgency

  3. I have in my memory an attempt by Margaret Bain, (as she then was), using what I think was a Private members Bill sometime in the 1970s regarding the use of isotherms as indicators of the difference in temperatures over the UK, and make allowances for these in setting costs of gas, electricity and in those days the cost of a bag of coal.

Needless to say that particular bill went nowhere, and it is only a memory, probably, not very accurate. Perhaps someone smarter than I, could unearth some details of this. If this was the practice, there would be a far more equitable system of costs across the UK. Who am I kidding?

  4. The SNP Gov just needs to restore the winter fuel allowance. Done.

Scotland in surplus in fuel and energy and nearer the source pays more. No parity.

Scotland the best place in the world for renewables. An economic advantage. Ruined by Westminster colossal, ignorant, illegal interference.

    1. Apart from the first sentence, what you say is true. However, popular misconception, perpetuated by Westminster and the press, although devolved and allowed to make our own decisions on some things, where the money goes depends entirely on how much Westminster allows us. If they cut our budget then unfortunately that has a knock on affect. Similarly, the British Government only gives us a fraction back of the money it takes from us when they rape our natural red houses for their own gains. Not for the good of the Population but for the good of their own profits

  6. The problem with national weather forecasts is they present an ‘average’ for a large notional area, hence your -10 example simply disappears…

I made the same point before concerning heat losses, that the average England winter temp is -3, but spanning from the south coast at +2 to Shap at -15…. – If the heating bill in ‘average’ England is 100 quid, its 143 in Shap for the exact same property, and bear in mind the price increase this year exacerbates the financial drain…

As aside, one lesson I learned in 2018 on my own place aside more insulation, was to watch the boiler return temperature, as it can profoundly hurt your wallet when it goes much over 30c (reduced efficiency at the boiler).

I’m luckier than most as my home monitoring system records it along with outside, room and loft temperatures, but I’m about to automate what I’ve been doing manually since 2018, weather compensation – Quite simply you turn up the feed temperature according to outside temperature to shorten the heating cycle which ends on 30c return, in my own case in 18-20 minutes – eg Feb 2018, at -16 outside, a 40 minute heating cycle consuming 1.3m3 gas – Subsequent winters at -16, a 18-20 minute heating cycle consuming 0.72m3….

  7. i agree , the Scottish government should pay the winter fuel allowance and cut the budget for something else such as agriculture , fisheries , supermarkets , through withdrawal of funding to Scottish Enterprise , hit big business with withdrawal of funds.

    1. Labour in Scotland saying they will devolve the responsibility for WFP from the DWP to Holyrood.

However,as usual with their duplicity, not saying how that will be funded (maybe from the millions that the Governor General now has at his disposal?).

Meantime we have to continue with the Anglo state’s Ein Reich,Ein Volk narrative.
