Even with a 10% fare increase for the Arran crossing, the nearest equivalent crossing in England, to the Isle of Wight, is still 45% more, for half the journey, to pay shareholder dividends

From the Largs & Millport Weekly News, yesterday:

COUNCILLORS are attempting to freeze fares on both the Arran and Cumbrae ferry routes and prevent a price hike.

At tomorrow’s North Ayrshire Council meeting, a motion is being put forward by Councillor Cameron Inglis calling for the local authority to write to cabinet secretary for transport, Fiona Hyslop, opposing the current proposal.

The latest move comes after the Scottish Government’s decision to impose a 10 per cent increase in ferry fares for 2025-26, which has been lambasted by West Scotland Labour MSP Katy Clark and her Conservative counterpart Jamie Greene.

I checked. For the one hour and twenty minutes Arran crossing, a return on Saturday and Sunday coming with 2 adults, 2 children and a standard car is £32.40. A 10% hike takes it up to £35.60

The nearest equivalent in England is the 40 minute Wightlink crossing from Portsmouth to Fishbourne which for the same requirements is £52, 44.9% more for a journey of half the time.

  2. So essentially a Tory councillor was advance promoting MSPs Katy Clark and Jamie Greene’s attempt at appearing relevant by making a fool of himself at a NAC meeting over a 3.20 increase increase in fare ?

How much is a coffee these days ?
