Many thanks to Cuckooshoe for alerting me to this, from Meatex on 16 October 2024, but of no interest to BBC Scotland:
Scotland’s red meat and offal exports beyond the UK have experienced a significant rise, reaching a value of £137 million, according to the latest survey by Quality Meat Scotland (QMS). The report highlights a remarkable recovery in the sector, with a 26% increase in export value compared to previous years.1
From ADHB on 1 October 2024:
The latest figures from HMRC show that from January to June 2024, total UK red meat exports were up 2% in volume on the year to 260,000 tonnes, worth £860m – an increase in value of 2% on the same period in 2023.
So, £137m is 15.9% of £860m. 8% of the population but twice that percentage of meat exports.
There’s more isn’t there?
From the Food and Drink Federation in 2024, 8% of the UK population but:
- 14.6% of total UK food and drink manufacturing GVA
- 10.8% of the UK’s food and drink manufacturing turnover
- 31.3% of total UK food and drink exports3

There has never been a shortage of meat and crop from Scotland’s farming industry, but let’s be under any illusions the figures indicate the sector is in rude financial health – Prices at the farm gate have in real terms been falling for years, whilst profits have moved up the supply chain….

Top story on the BBC website in their Scottish Politics page (since yesterday) is a positive story for the Labour party.
“Budget to bring ‘era of growth’ for Scotland – Murray”
Sorry what “Budget” is that then ?
Surely not the same budget that Keir Starmer is saying is going to be “painful” ?
Yes it the same budget.
Apparently (with another election coming up in 2026 in Scotland) we in Scotland will buck the trend and instead of the Autumn budget being “painful” we here in Scotland will see an “era of growth”. (thanks only to Labour apparently).
If one were cynical one would think this was both Ian Murray and the BBC campaigning for Labour in Scotland for the 2026 election.
In this article Murray states “”While Labour cleans up 14 years of Tory mess, the SNP created a mess of their own making, having wasted £5bn over their years in office due to their own buy now, pay later policies”
“the SNP created a mess of their own making”
So once again Scotland’s devolved government is to take total blame for the Tory UK government’s bad decisions while Wales , we are told by Labour UK, had to contend with the Tory UK government’s bad decisions and so that is their excuse for their poor performance in public services as a Welsh devolved government.
That seems a tad partisan of Ian Murray does it not.
Also a bit rich of Labour’s Ian Murray stating the SNP had a “buy now pay later” attitude.
He is surely aware of Labour’s PFI (Private Finance Initiative) that left a £30 billion debt upon Scottish tax payers, which is often described as “Labour’s toxic legacy to Scotland”.
The rest of the article is just #SNPBAD while ignoring the fact that Labour’s honeymoon period as the new UK government has now been cut (very) short.
That though has been totally of their , Labour’s, making.
Lesson to be learned is do not promise “Change” if elected then once elected deliver the opposite. (or rather deliver worse than the previous government).
People being people will then no longer trust you or believe you.
I do not think Scotland under a Labour UK government will see an “era of growth” but we will see , as per, more in the way of an “era of lies and propaganda” via Labour.
But not just via Labour but also via the BBC who as a media, well their masks have slipped a long long time ago , as supposed impartial providers of the “news where we are” that always comes , as news, with a heavy biased perspective from where “others are” , who as others, are opponents of both the SNP and also of Scottish independence.
