Scotland v Portugal – Guardian and BBC Scotland see two different games

Thanks to @Kokotxas1 for alerting me to this:

The Guardian‘s Ewan Murray sees an even game (above) and reports:

Scotland delivered a resolute defensive display to hold Portugal to a goalless draw and secure the first point of their Nations League A campaign.

The Scots passed up a glorious chance in the opening minutes through Scott McTominay and were then starved of possession as the visitors searched for an opener.

Scotland will take great heart from the small step made here. Not only did they scrap in a form which was successful prior to recent turmoil but had they a level of organisation which owes plenty to effective coaching. Clarke’s detractors should take note. “It was a good shift,” said Clarke without any hint of understatement.

The Tartan Army breathed. By full time they heralded Clarke and his exhausted players. It is only a point; the nature of how it was achieved just felt wholly significant. “It’s not about turning a corner, it’s about working hard and not letting the country down,” added the manager. “We know we are a good team.” A penny for the thoughts of Ronaldo.

BBC Scotland’s Andy Burke, saw it differently with the above starkly different possession ratio and, like his colleagues repeating ‘drug deaths’, ‘ferry delays’ and ‘hospital infections’ at every opportunity, was keen to quickly talk us down, in a way Murray had not:

Scotland delivered a resolute defensive display to hold Portugal to a goalless draw and secure the first point of their Nations League A campaign. The Scots passed up a glorious chance in the opening minutes through Scott McTominay and were then starved of possession as the visitors searched for an opener.

The draw means Steve Clarke’s side have now won just one of their past 16 matches, but they avoided the unwanted history of becoming the first Scotland team to lose five straight matches.

  2. A couple of days earlier the English women’s cricket team beat Scotland and the reader on the news concluded the report with the statement that England now only had to beat the West Indies to get into the semifinal.

      1. Unsurpassed entitlement since …. ever!”

And showing a woeful ignorance of Scottish attitudes. (How unusual!) An anecdote of my daughter’s would be instructive for them, perhaps.

She told me she was sitting at a bar in New Zealand with a couple of friends and these 2 strapping young gents arrived and got ‘chatting’. After a short while they mentioned (with what she considered a strange sort of swagger) that they were Australian cricketers who were over in NZ taking a summer school to train aspiring Kiwis.

        Her (politely): Oh. That’s nice.

Them (bemused): You don’t seem very impressed.

Her (apologetically): Sorry. I’m Scottish. Cricket isn’t really a big thing there. Mostly footie.

Friends (nodding): Same in Germany, really…

        Them (scuttling off): Oh…

    1. Easy, sleazy reporting from a ‘Scottish churnalist’, no? Using both words loosely.

Maybe they should be referred to in the same way as Party Branch representatives – ‘in Scotland’ rather than Scottish?

Not sure what to do about churnalism. My Old Mum used to refer to people who weren’t, shall we say, being entirely accurate as “telling stories” or “storytellers”.

Storytellers in Scotland? CutnPasters in Scotland?

  3. STV showed england v greece live but scotland v croatia and scotland v portugal were only shown on youtube international by a norwegian broadcaster called viaplay , england womens football is shown live on STV too.Wales have their own tv channel which shows wales games live its called Sc4 i think they even show the tour de france etc live because they have a welsh rider participating.STV has been taken over by the english to deprive us of access to anything Scottish their head office is in london too just like BBC scotland whos head office is in london , the storytellers who work for them in Scotland are shameful unlikeable creatures

  4. On the night of the Scotland v Portugal football match (as in the one not shown ‘Live’ in Scotland on a UK TV channel “where you are”) SKY news, in their later edition of their sports news , decided that England appointing a new manager for their National football team was the top sports story of the night and not the Scottish football match. (where we got a not too shabby result as in we drew nil-nil with Portugal).

Now had that been Scotland appointing a new Football manager for our national side and England playing on the same night that news was released then what do you think SKY News Sport would have chosen as their top story ?

I think there is no need for me to elaborate on that one surely.

  5. I’m rather surprised that anyone from BBC Scotland was able to comment on the match. After all, they refuse to allow anyone in Scotland to watch their international team on TV – surely that refusal should apply to themselves too?

Or did they take advantage of press passes to watch in person for free, even though they barely qualify as press? Much like their Labour masters…
