Drug possession offences drop by more than 10 000 cases, 34%

From Recorded crime in Scotland statistics: FOI release published today:

Information requested – An age breakdown for the figures presented within Table A9 of the Recorded Crime in Scotland, 2023-24 Accredited Official Statistics for the years 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24. Specifically, age breakdowns showing how many children of various age groups (under 16 and 16-18) were recorded as having committed EACH of the crimes in the table in EACH of the last four years (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24).

Total 31,900 24,400

From 31 900 to 21 400 in only one year – a 10 500 drop, 32.9%.

I guess this ‘good’ news will come under the category of ‘not good enough news for the BBC/STV’ to be forced to disclose it to the general public or if it does will come with the usual caveat that there are still far too many crimes being committed in Scotland so don’t ever get the feeling you will not be affected some time soon and will be able to walk the streets safely during those long long dark winter nights . Its still hell out there so beware.

  2. While the overall reduction is welcome, the increase from 200 to 900 for under-16s is of concern.

    Is it due to dealers using more school age children to do the deliveries to customers? There is some anecdotal evidence from parts of our area that this might be happening.

    Another possibility is that the Police are aware of such a trend and are stopping and searching more under 16s and, consequently, finding more of them to be in possession of drugs.
