Once upon a time not so long ago these ‘Scottish’ newspapers – the Daily Record/Sunday Mail and the Scottish Daily Express – would occupy quite different places on the political spectrum on most issues. That was then and after all, we’ve been told we are in a time of ‘change’! Of course they would be united for the Union and this is probably the key factor in this tale!
On Sunday 6 October, the Sunday Mail on its front page and website had this ‘exclusive’: On the same day, the Scottish Daily Express had this:
Note the journalists involved. For the Sunday Mail, it’s political editor John Ferguson. For the Scottish Daily Express, it’s David Walker, ‘politics reporter’ and someone called John Ferguson. Surely not ……?
This gets even more intriguing! Within the same Express’ article, in paragraph 2, we find this:

So here we have the Scottish Daily Express revealing its sisterly bond with the Sunday Mail! Sharing writers (?) and aggregating and amplifying for the Union. All rightwards and better together!
And what about the Daily Record? By extension, it’s part of the sisterhood too! Strangely this is all so very unsurprising!
Editor Footnote: My Celtic-supporting, labourer, father-in-law, read the Tory Express because the Record was ‘pro-Rangers!’

People tend to forget, or even haven’t heard, that the Express & Daily Redcoat both have the same owner Reach plc.

Re common ownership, that I didn’t know!
The main blog post – where it has ‘posted movie png’ – is missing the reproduction of a screenshot of the relevant paragraph from the Express article:
‘And according to our sister paper the Sunday Mail, massive developments in the case are expected to happen in the coming weeks. There has been no public movement since Peter Murrell was charged with embezzling funds from the Nats in April, with the Crown Office yet to make a decision on whether to go ahead with the case.’ (my emphasis)

I had a neighbour more than 40 years ago who was Father of Chapel (shop steward) for the National Union of Journalists at the Daily Record/Ranger. He said that the Record (part of The Daily Mirror Group) supported Labour not out of political principle but as a marketing position.
At the time close to half of those who voted, voted Labour and the majority of the other papers were pro – Tory, so the owners – at the time IPC – decided it’s editorial stance would be pro-Labour because it was likely to get substantial circulation. And it did.
Some of the journalists were socialists or social democrats, and some attained editorial positions. But, there were limits to how far the owner’s concept of ‘editorial independence’ would stretch. Indeed, during the 1960s the chair of IPC, Cecil King tried to organise a coup to remove the Labour Prime Minister, Harold Wilson.
In Scotland the Record had a substantial Rangers supporting readership – royalist and pro -Tory, despite being working class. So, this always tempered how radical the Record was.
With the decline in newspaper readership, most of the titles are owned by a few companies such as Reach (Express, Record, Herald, National, Glasgow Times)

Thatcher gave the Press over to the right wing. The UK Gov is supposed to support a fair and balanced Press. Without a fair and balanced Press there is no democracy.
