Early release scheme in Scotland a fantastic success as re-offending rate plummets

The media is full of headlines like:

On in ten prisoners released early back behind bars

and

Dozens of early release prisoners are back in jail

10% reconviction rate eh?

What’s the usual rate?

From the Scottish Government in July 2024, the most recent data suggest the reconviction rate is 26.9%, pushing three times higher.

  1. In UK as a whole we do not have a back up plan to help released prisoners change their habits , habits that will likely see them getting into trouble again , we need an organisation that helps them change their way of life , improves their way of life and their behaviour so that they feel better about their ability to act positively and fit into the society around them so that they dont break the rules that lead to imprisonment. This back up plan is costly and staff intensive it would require quality accomodation and appropriate facilities , a training centre.Government in UK dont want to spend the money so we have this not so merry merrygoround.Government policy at present keeps a hardcore of people unemployed for the purpose of so called competition helping business to keep wages low , until this is stopped the government will never provide the good facilities to help released prisoners for fear of criticism that released prisoners have a better life than the unemployed so released prisoners are dumped on the unemployed pile.

    1. Let’s see what Mr James Timpson who was appointed by the Government in July 2024 to deal with matters such as this comes up with. His company which does shoe repairs and key cutting has been employing ex-offenders for many years as part of a programme of rehabilitation. As far as I know he did not have to make a donation to Sir Bung-me.
