Work begins on huge transfer of another of Scotland’s energy resources to power 8 million homes in the rest of the UK for no return whatsoever

In Energy News Live, three days ago but getting little MSM coverage, the above headline suggesting energy might flow from the UK to Scotland and this:

Construction has started on the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2), a £4.3bn electricity transmission project. The 2GW subsea cable will connect Peterhead in Scotland to Drax in Yorkshire and will be the UK’s largest electricity transmission project to date.

Offshore Delivery Director for National Grid Zac Richardson said: “EGL2 is the first of four currently proposed 2GW projects between Scotland and England to begin construction and in total these projects, delivered in partnership by National Grid, could provide enough renewable electricity to power eight million homes.” https://www.energylivenews.com/2024/09/26/work-begins-on-huge-uk-scotland-energy-link/

The flow is one-way, from Scotland to England, and just like the oil and gas revenues before, there will be no enhancement of the Scottish economy comparable to Norway’s, including $1 trillion plus in the bank.

As with the oil and gas revenues, Scotland’s renewables will only subsidise the UK’s economy burdened with debt and expenses like Trident and the royal family.

  1. Seriously? Scotland is really giving away, for absolutely nothing, to another country, her renewable energies? This makes me angry and extremely sad for everyone in Scotland. Who else, in this world, would this be right for, on any level? Scotland really does need to get a grip!!

    1. Same I sometimes just cannot bear to read about the absolute rip off (scam) of Scotland’s energy etc resources especially when England attributes debt they take out, to Scotland, and when they make Scotland pay for infrastructure for ripping off Scotland, and when they make the people of Scotland pay MORE for their energy/heating/cooking etc and that will I expect be the case for public services etc, like NHS, even the Scottish parliament has electricity to pay for so no doubt paying more in standing charges than anywhere in England as well.

On a personal note my son’s autism support service (based in England) via a ‘charity’ are reducing some care in Scotland due to high levels of overheads, leaving some people without support which is devastating for the those losing their support I hear, and others like us, with a service that is possibly not going to be much use or bespoke. Electricity was sighted as one reason for their costs…so EngGov making Scotland pay more for electricity etc, affects all sorts of services as well as domestic supply.
Scotland is so scammed it’s tragic it really is.

  2. Scotland in surplus in fuel and energy, and near the source, pays more. No parity. A burden on the Scottish economy. Westminster taking Scottish revenues and resources. Returned accured debt because of Westminster poor, bad policies. Independence support increasing . People need to get out and vote for it. A higher turnout.

Recent council by election. 22% turnout. No good enough. People complain than do not vote.

  4. Labour’s 2014 message ‘Pooling and sharing’ but in many instances it is one way traffic as in it is always seemingly only going from Scotland to England.

As in Scotland always having to ‘share’ (forced to) it’s resources with England yet the media and UK politicians insist it is the rest of the UK who subsidises us in Scotland.

(Scotland apparently is promoted as being the poor relation in the supposed UK Family of Nations).

Of course our Scottish energy surplus will not solely benefit us in Scotland, as in where we will see our energy bill decreased significantly, because that is not how any UK political party as a UK government operates.

Indeed in order for us to see that happen we will need our own Scottish government, in an independent country , to ensure that we as citizens , will surely only reap the benefits of our (vast) resources sourced from our own country when we are no longer a part of the UK.

(The same UK whose various UK governments bleed Scotland dry in plundering our resources yet they state we, Scotland, are the needy ones within the UK).

Time we , in Scotland, ‘took back control’ of those things that they ,all UK political parties, pretend will never sustain an independent Scotland yet they also expect us to believe they are abundant enough to sustain the whole UK !

Time for logic and reality to begin to start to emerge within more people in Scotland as only then will sanity finally prevail, as then Pro UK parties , their media and too their UK , will surely then all begin to fail. (in Scotland).

    Amen to that happening.

  5. Key to this John is the transmission lines – For many years the “National Grid” vaguely located somewhere in England but never adequately funded for upgrading were it a Scottish problem, has been further abused by London political thinking to ensure England remained gatekeeper – Hence there is no european interconnect with Scotland’s potential generation, as that is the privilege of London.

What London are now desperate to preserve after years of trying to scupper renewables is to remain the gatekeepers despite running out of sources and increasing demand, hence the transmission line panic – A good example is that of Orkney, screwed over because the mainland interconnect needed 20 years ago will not happen until 2026, because it’s “reserved”.

London was never going to get away with the eco-friendly bullshit of Drax in place of a super-dooper nuclear plant forever, but it does make sense to interconnect there as the onward grid (southward) is already in place.

As to “Offshore Delivery Director for National Grid Zac Richardson said: “EGL2 is the first of four currently proposed 2GW projects between Scotland and England to begin construction and in total these projects, delivered in partnership by National Grid” “, Do the maths – 8GW capacity is exactly 25% of what Hinkley C will produce in 20 canteen, the latest guesstimate is early 2030s….

There is only one way to solve this complex mismanagement, and that is by abandoning London to it’s own devices through independence – They’ve f….d up enough….

    1. Any insights into the potential impact – positive or negative – on Scotland’s ability to benefit economically from our renewable energy generation of the Westminster government’s purchase this month from the National Grid of the Network System Operator in order to take it into public ownership?

      From https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-publicly-owned-national-energy-system-operator-to-pave-the-way-to-a-clean-energy-future

‘Britain’s energy system will be planned by a new publicly owned organisation as part of a new more strategic approach, which will help to deliver clean power by 2030.

‘The new National Energy System Operator (NESO) will help connect new generation projects with the electricity grid, working alongside Great British Energy to deploy renewable energy, so bill payers can reap the benefits of clean, secure, homegrown power.

‘It comes as the government today reached an agreement with National Grid to acquire the Electricity System Operator, which will be transferred to public ownership.’

It seems to be a deal involving the UK government paying £630 million.

In principle, public ownership of core functions IMHO is a ‘good thing’ but not necessarily (understatement!) when a Westminster government seeking to deliver what England needs and wants is impacting Scotland’s indigenous economic assets.

      1. In principle a good start, although my suspicions are this is directly linked to EGL2 etc. and matters in England – Rising import costs from Europe to SE England had given HMG a massive political and financial headache, they were desperate to gain arms-length political control once forced to invest.

Pinch-points on the grid and lack of reinforcement have long dogged Scotland’s power generation and exports, with more than a little political chicanery involved in preventing a direct interconnector to Europe – The EGL2 forward link to Drax was a pre-condition of SSE’s Viking wind farm project from the outset to bypass the problems, a cute move by SSE as it forced HMG’s hand.

  6. Presume Scotland is being made to pay for the infrastructure as well! Labcons wasting no time in building infrastructure to thieve more of Scotland’s resources wow. Tragic, for Scotland, lying scheming thieves, Labour are really sticking up the finger at Scotland aren’t they! It’s going to get ‘worse’ just watch ’em! No words.

  8. Scotland is receiving payments from offshore wind energy.

These payments are collected by Crown Estates Scotland who pass them on to the Scottish Government.

The Crown Estate Scotland Report for 2023/24 has more information.

These annual payments could by 2030 be very substantial since many more offshore wind energy projects are expected to be operational by then.

Shoul more projects be added in the years to come, which is very likely, Scottish offshore wind energy would become a major export to the EU.

    https://www.crownestatescotland.com/scotlands-property/offshore-wind/scotwind-rapid-review

“ScotWind will also generate annual multi-million pound payments once projects are operating. Crown Estate Scotland passes revenue profit from offshore wind to Scottish Government.”
