Labour attempts to scare Scots with fake news about the Shetland subsea cable cut in 2022 but fails to mention how many of the Royal Navy’s subs to defend us are currently stuck in dock

In a report reminiscent of George Robertson’s ‘dark forces’ that would circle an undefended independent Scotland after 2014, Luke Pollard ‘armed forces minister’ and MP for Devonport, son of a submariner:

Scotland’s coastline has become a terrifying new front on the West’s conflict with Russia. Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard has warned Vladimir Putin is likely operating fleets of unmanned submarines designed to sabotage sub-sea internet cables which could cripple the UK. Military intelligence experts have said communications lines severed off the coast of Shetland two years ago was almost certainly the work of Russia, which has also been accused of operating “spy ships” in the North Sea. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/scotlands-shores-forefront-wests-conflict-33670125

The ‘work of Russia?’

Here’s what an expert said at the time:

Páll Højgaard Vesturbú, managing director of NET, a subsidiary of Faroese Telecom, said the organization has “reason to believe that the cable was damaged by a fishing vessel.” The SHEFA-2 cable has previously been damaged by suspected fishing vessels, including twice over the span of a few months in 2013. https://therecord.media/fishing-vessel-not-sabotage-to-blame-for-shetland-island-submarine-cable-cut

However, let’s say it was the Russians, surely the broad shoulders of the Royal Navy would protect us?

ALL six of Britain’s hunter-killer subs are stuck in port as the Royal Navy has no working docks for repairs. Three have been tied up for more than a year, leaving UK waters “spectacularly exposed” to record levels of Russian threats.

The nuclear-powered vessels are designed to hunt Russian subs, spy on Britain’s enemies and deliver special forces on secret missions. But none of the Astute-class subs — the fleet’s newest — have conducted a single operational voyage this year.

HMS Ambush has not sailed for two years. HMS Audacious has spent 15 months in His Majesty’s Naval Base Devonport. HMS Artful has been 14 months at HMNB Clyde, where HMS Astute has been since December. The only suitable dry dock in HMNB Devonport is midway through a years-long upgrade by contractors Babcock.

I know, arm the CalMac ferries. We’ve got 34 of those doing more than 500 sailings a day.

  1. proves how weak our energy security is. If the grid wasn’t supplying England there would be no issues. Local controlled grids will provide security for all of Scotland with no worry about cables getting cut.

  2. Another load of nonsense. Starmer is trying to nuke the world. Trying to start a nuclear war. Typical Westminster another illegal, non ending war on the horizon. To distract from the Labour disaster. Death and destruction at home and away.

The only stop gap will be if Trump returns to power. Unless a shooter gets him first. The support for malicious fire arms in the US might not pay off for survival. More Americans are shot at home. Life expectancy 76. Junk food and excessive weaponry. Then in the never ending illegal wars since WW2.

On and on they go destroying the world and the world economy. The old Alliance of poverty at other people’s expense. UK the most unequal place in the world. Scottish Independence will sort it out, when people vote for it. More prosperity and less death and destruction. Trident dumped in Scotland. Rotting nuclear hub lying all around.

  3. The thing that stands out for me in this article are the words ‘crucial to the UK’. We know from experience that anything ‘crucial to the UK’ actually means crucial to England and is therefore very, very crucial.

It’s just a pity the MOD hadn’t thought how crucial sub sea cables are to the UK before they spent our hard earned taxes on, for example, tanks that don’t work and great big boats that cost a fortune to maintain and aren’t really suitable for guarding crucial sub sea cables – or much else for that matter.

  4. ” Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard ” is a bollard, why the hell would Russia cut internet cables they rely on to spread their own disinformation ?

And why does he believe Scotland is the only country in the west with a coastline as he stares out to sea, hmmm ?
