Herald writer suggests Tartan Army needs to become nastier, more misogynistic, homophobic and racist to encourage the team to fight harder for victory

In a report opening with the above image of Hungary’s ultra fans – a group from a Putin-supporting, almost one party state where violent racism, homophobia, misogyny, and anti-democratic tendencies are the dominant values of its government, the Herald’s Chief Football Writer, Matthew Lindsay, notes only that they ‘out-supported’ the Scotland supporters.

By out-supporting he means, we have to assume, they roared unacceptable abuse at the Scotland team and supporters that might have shamed 1970s supporters in the UK.

Before he gets to those so committed and effective Hungary fans, Lindsay praises the Rangers supporting Union Bears for comparable support.

He thinks if the Tartan Army took tips from the Union Bears, the team would do better?

I’m sorry but is he off his f*****g chump!

  1. John – you can safely ignore the slevverin gs of young Master Lindsay. He lang syne achieved his heart’s desire, when he became Right Worthy Master of the Lap Top Loyal and, in that role anything he writes may be safely ignored, since it is by definition – pure pish.

  2. It is his deliberate ignorance of the years spent trying to get rid Scotland of these very things that galls. His is a Scotland he and other unionists are desperate to cling on to. With every issue now the herald condemns itself to a history they adore. A history that self-determined Scots will never look kindly on.

  3. Matthew Lindsay needn’t go as far as Hungary, the UK is near enough a one policy state administered by two parties and he could find plenty of examples of racism, homophobia and misogyny in the Westminster Parliament emanating from the government benches over the last decade.

Ultra nationalists have taken the UK out of the EU, human rights have been and continue to be eroded and half the population of Scotland is labelled as a terrorist threat, the Hungarians are amateurs at this game.

  4. “He thinks if the Tartan Army took tips from the Union Bears”

Which if they , the Tartan Army, then did act in a similar fashion or have a similar attitude to some ‘Union Bears’ , they the Tartan Army, would then, as a result, be subjected to abuse and condemnation from writer’s such as this one from the Herald and also others within his so called ‘profession’ .

The complimentary feedback the Tartan Army got in the recent Euros Football competition , from both the hosts and others, did much more in way of promoting Scotland in a positive light than some of the previous publicity that was broadcast in a previous Euros competition with some English fans behaviour, when some English fans (without tickets) were shown storming Wembley stadium in the Euros Final.

(We also saw other disruptive behaviour outside Wembley stadium including vandalism which was reminiscent of previous behaviour seen with some English fans in other international football competitions).

Of course the whole point is that Scotland’s fans can never really be seen to be or promoted as fans who are in any way unique or the best .

Did anyone see or hear wall to wall constant (overblown) coverage in the UK media on how the Tartan Army received so many compliments and huge respect on the international stage in the recent Euros competition where “Scotland’s fans were officially voted as the best supporters at Euro 2024“.

So forget anyone in Scotland attempting to , via some examples/instances, to promote that which is sarcastically referred to by others as being ‘Scottish exceptionalism’ , as if we dare to think we are at times better than some others within the UK , then we will always read about and hear from both the UK media and some UK politicians that, as a statement, is most definitely not the case.

    God forbid !

That is a No No as far as the dominant pro UK media (and some UK politicians ) are concerned.

See the Pro UK media just cannot even allow us or the Scottish football fans to bask in the glory of the exemplary behaviour they were commended for showing , as Scottish fans, on the international stage in the recent Euros competition or indeed in other international previous to that as they , as a pro UK media, must always drag us, Scotland, down (to their level and also to the level of some of their very badly behaved English fans on the World stage).

So with them , as a pro UK media, hoping that we all, in Scotland, fall for some of their same tired old Sh*te , with this poor example of how they pretend that in Scottish football fans not behaving badly , they are then , as football fans, somehow letting down our national football team.

Honestly there is more credibility in Viz , a satirical comic , than in some of the Cr*p that supposedly presents itself as being the media in Scotland (and elsewhere in the UK too).

    What next ?

    The mind boggles !

  5. At the Poland game I saw a Polish man with his kid. Both were bedecked in their teams colours.

Poland for the Dad and Scotland for the wee lad.

Matthew in suggesting that the Tartan Army should get nasty only reveals that he isn’t much of a journalist, nor a football fan and that he gets his nonsense from one of one of Glasgow’s less respected football teams.

  6. The herald and other english newspapers were given financial help by government during covid then when covid dragged on and life didnt go back to how it had been these deadbeat newspapers were going bust running out of customers and money and paying off staff particularly journalists , in stepped the BBC to provide their journalists and that has continued in Scotland with the herald who still have journalists paid by BBC , the BBC is westminsters propaganda arm the herald is a useful idiot in its propaganda war on Scotland. The herald serves the idiots in Scotland who want to fight every day every opportunity you know the kind yes the rangers nutters and also those scots that wear the england shirt.

  7. The Hungarian government only wants to maintain traditional European values. Therefore your comments about them are way off the mark.

However you are right about the Herald correspondent.
