55 year-old Croatian ferry failure kills 3 as cheap steel ruptures

Thanks to Linda Graham of Broadcasting Scotland for alerting me to this:

From infoMARE, yesterday:

On Saturday a hatch of the company’s Mljet ferry Croatian shipping Jadrolinija fell into the sea in the stages docking of the ship at the port of Sveti Petro della Brač, on the island of Brač, an incident that caused panic among the passengers but no damage to people and vehicles on board. A A similar incident occurred on 11 August in the port of Mali Lošinj on board the ferry Lastovo Jadrolinija had a much more dramatic outcome: the collapse of a hatch had overwhelmed four seamen of the ship killing three instantly and seriously wounding the fourth.

Referring then to the different ages of the two ferries involved in the accidents, with the Lastovo whose construction dates back to 1969 and with the Mljet that entered service in 2014, Milanovic specified that, “Obviously, the problem does not only concern the old ships, which – he said – are purchased in circumstances that are not very but also the general maintenance and assistance to ships, since accidents also occur on the new ferries”

According to Regija, on the same day:

In the case of Mljet there was a rupture of steel front.

So, we can now add Croatian ferry deaths to Greek ferry deaths, to New Zealand ferries drifting to rocks with 700 on board, New Zealand ferries crashing and running aground with only one deckhand on the bridge, Toronto ferries twice the age of CalMac ferries breaking down constantly and running with dangerously low staffing, Washington State Ferries ‘held together with chewing gum‘, British Columbia ferries flooding the car bays and delaying four times as long as CalMac have, Isle of Wight ferry owners charging four times the CalMac rate to pay shareholders, Norwegian ferries unable to staff safely, new Scilly islands ferries cancelled after not one sailing and a Channel Island ferry killing fishermen because the crew are knackered and speak no English!

All of them privatised and charging at least twice the rate for a lesser service.

Meanwhile in Scotland, the most subsidised, cheapest, safest, youngest vessel, most reliable, most accessible, most frequent service in the world is not good enough for entitled settlers from Buckinghamshire.

  1. I did notice that Maritime Williams of the once respected Herald newspaper, has been strangely quite of late.

No doubt there will be a contrived Herald exclusive piece about hoteliers on St. Kilda suffering because of Cal Mac’s poor performance soon! 🙂

  2. Jadrolinija has two ‘a’s and one ‘l’ – the same as Calmac has. Does that not suggest something? Croatia has a capital ‘C’ as does Calmac – this must be more than just a coincidence. BBC Scotland’s Disclosure and The Herald team must investigate.

    Alasdair Macdonald.
