More than FOUR times as many “fleeing rising classroom violence and falling standards in England’s schools”

By Professor John Robertson OBA

My thanks to namorrodor for alerting me to this.

In the Telegraph‘s May 2024, Surge in homeschooling in Scotland amid rising classroom violence and falling standards, they reported:

Figures released by Scottish councils show that over 2,200 children are currently being educated at home, an increase of 40 per cent in just two years. The total has more than doubled in seven years.1

With 10 times the population, all things being equal, that’d be 22 000 in England.

BUT, according to Department of Education figure reported in the Conversation, two days ago, there were 92 000 pupils being homeschooled.2

More than 4 times as many, fleeing rising classroom violence and falling standards?

  1. Waiting to pick up my takeaway, silent tv news screen with the headline news running across the bottom of the screen on this very subject in England, first thought was this will be a Scottish problem tomorrow, nope, same day. How predictable.

    Golfnut.

  2. Children who are neurodiverse stay at home and have to be home schooled. Many suffer from anxiety and do fit into main stream learning. They can have meltdowns. Some teachers take that as violence. Instead of anxiety and insecurity.

Additional needs pupils need empathy and a quiet place if they get overwhelmed. They can get over whelmed with noise and not being given conducive learning. Projects they are interested in. They often have special interest that can be developed. They can have abilities above the norm.

The Scottish Gov are funding nurture/nature learning and counsellors in school. To help distressed pupil and pupils on the spectrum. Councils can cut additional needs support. The Scottish Gov ring fences educational funding, in an attempt to stop Council education cuts.
