Since the Election, how many times has Keir Starmer been up to visit Scotland ?

Pre the General Election, Keir Starmer was never away from Scotland, same Scotland that he said was at the heart of his government, so since the GE how many times has he, Keir Starmer, been up to visit Scotland ?

More than before the UK GE or far far less ?

Well he came up on the 8th July , just after the GE, but he only came up to Edinburgh to tell us Scots and others who live in Scotland that “”This is part one (as in Labour’s win in the UK GE)” but he then added that “part two comes in 2026.” (Holyrood election).

However sourced from the BBC website they said that he, Starmer, also :

“Insists that he wants to reset relations with governments around the UK, hence his decision to make an early dash through Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, as well as meeting English mayors, in his first few days in the job”.

“A dash through Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales” !

Mind you his visits to Scotland pre the UK GE were also fleeting.

But the reality is he, Starmer, has no intentions of resetting relations with Scotland as , like the Tories, his plans on this is for his UK government to bypass our Scottish government and parliament.

I read this on social media today:

“Labour has set aside £150m to give to Scottish Secretary Ian Murray to do as he pleases. The cash, if handed over to the Scottish Govt, could fund the winter fuel payment for all pensioners in Scotland”

However The Sunday Mail reported that “The Westminster Government could introduce new legislation to allow the Scotland Office to allocate £150m for local authority measures to combat poverty”

So in other words Labour, like the Tories before them, are bypassing the Scottish government and allowing Ian Murray SOS to give money directly to the Local authorities , but if things go wrong or are not improved , then in them doing it this way I am confident that some of those respective local authorities, the Labour PM, the Labour SOS Ian Murray and also Labour at Holyrood will all blame the Scottish government for failing to act in reducing poverty in Scotland.

So much for Labour’s other pledge pre the GE in them promising to strengthen devolution.

This action by them is the opposite.

Indeed it is weakening devolution in Scotland but I wonder if Labour Mayors in England will also see their funding bypassed to elsewhere too?

Starmer also said in his visit to Scotland “”We won because we campaigned as changed Labour,” he then added: “And we will govern as changed Labour” so he is actually admitting that the “Change” he and others in the Labour party were promising and promoting during the GE campaign was only for us to see the Labour party as a changed party.

(Meaning that the “change” in their election slogan was them no longer wanting to be seen as a socialist party but more wanting to be seen as a party similar to the Tory party as per their actions and words once elected as the new Labour UK government).

So the “Change” is not actually the public in the UK seeing anything significant in the way of actual “change” to their lives in the UK from the misery and hardship many of us suffered via the former Tory UK government via their cruel policies , high energy prices ,high food price etc

(Another one to be filed under Gordon Brown’s “see the small print”).

      1. Yes, LibDem whose name escapes me (damn these senior moments) Nick Clegg? Every time I share a TuS article it’s removed right away. Almost as if they are targeted.

  1. As I long said what would happen, is happening. A Westminster Government would never abolish Holyrood, it would just bypass it, and that is exactly what is planned. Don’t say we didn’t warn this would happen, but a goodly number of the Scottish electorate chose to ignore the signs, and now we are lumbered with another bunch of evil people, yes, the Labour Party, who envince nothing but ill will towards our country. Change all right. Aye, change for the worse.

    1. I agree to a fair extent Alex, but the SNP contributed significantly to its own downfall.
Its long period of largely unchallenged political numbers in Councils, in Holyrood and at Westminster evoked in a number of people in the party a feeling of comfort in how things were for them.

The same happened to Labour during its even longer period in power in Scotland.

It is something which happens in almost all organisations. It is called ‘goal displacement’ – the goal for which the organisation was set up for, such as independence or redistribution of wealth and power more equitably becomes pushed aside for new personal goals for those within the organisation. They still claim, probably with self deluded sincerity that they still aspire to the stated goal, but, in practice the organisation becomes a vehicle for them and their cronies.

I remember at a school board meeting – which had a parental majority – a teacher trade union member stating without self-awareness, that ‘too much of the school budget is being spent on pupils. More ought to be spent on teachers’ welfare, such as better seats in the staff room’. He justified this by equating pupil learning with teachers’ working conditions. He had displaced the goal of education of children with a goal of improving things for teachers.

The independence campaigns in Scotland need to use this period when the SNP is in some disarray to rethink how we move things on in changed circumstances. Around 50% of Scots want independence and this percentage is higher amongst those below 55 years of age.

It seems to me that ‘Scottish’ Labour has resumed its sense of entitlement that it knows what is best for Scotland and that that does not entail acknowledging the desire of half the population.

  2. The pensioners who voted Labour are already having their eyes opened to be more observant in the future. People wanted rid of the Tories so much they did not think things through. It can be sorted Holyrood 2026. To safe guard Scotland. By a Party with better policies. SNP.

People could be in for a shock in voting unionist. Voters remorse. More people coming out to vote and not voting unionist. To save Devolution and move towards Independence. An increased support. Lost the battle but not the war. Especially if people rally round.
