Greek ferries – one passenger pushed off to his death, fourteen arrested over a fight, another fight over the toilets and a car full of passengers nearly in the soup as captain fails to dock properly

Imagine any of this happened on a CalMac ferry.

Today, from https://www.ekathimerini.com/:

A fight broke out on a Greek passenger ferry travelling from Crete to Athens, state-run broadcaster ERT reported on Monday.

The brawl is thought to have erupted when a passenger complained to a crew member about the on-board toilet facilities during the eight-hour journey from Hania to Piraeus port. The report did not clarify if the facilities were shut or not working.

The crew member attempted to calm down the passenger but the argument soon spiralled out of control and the two men came to blows. A second passenger joined the fight in support of the seaman and the three men had to be separated by other crew members and passengers.

Yesterday, from The Maritime Executive:

After a car loading procedure went badly wrong at a port on the Greek island of Andros, the master of a ro/ro ferry faces criminal charges, and the vessel has been idled for an investigation.

On Thursday evening, the ferry Saonisos was taking aboard passengers at the port of Gavrio, Andros in rough weather. Gale-force winds were buffeting the vessel as oncoming passengers came up the stern ramp. Video from the scene shows that the ramp was making only intermittent contact with the pier.

Five days ago, from the Independent:

Fourteen passengers have reportedly been arrested after a fight broke out on a Greek islands passenger ferry.

The brawl, on board a ship carrying 717 passengers, is thought to have erupted when two men exchanged blows during a three-hour journey from the island of Tinos to Rafina on mainland Greece.

Tourist were forced to wade through water to disembark (Image: @thandojo X social media)

Tourists have reacted with fury after they were forced to wade through neck-deep water to disembark a ferry arriving at Balos, in Crete from Kissamos. Crete is one of a number of popular holiday resorts in Europe that is facing overtourism problems during the peak summer season. In an attempt to limit numbers, local officials took the bizarre decision to ban the use of floating platforms for ferries.

These are used to help travellers disembark safely from ferries arriving in Crete, as well as allowing people to board.

Last September from the Guardian:

Outrage over the drowning of a passenger who was pushed from the ramp of a Greek ferry has mounted after leaked recordings of radio conversations appeared to reveal racist attitudes among the crew.

In one extract, the ship’s master is apparently heard saying that he thought the passenger, subsequently identified as a Greek, was a foreigner.

I could go on.
