Only 8% of the population but 20% of the medals and 21% of the golds

Spotted by Davy Gow, above, but all-too-predictably, grudged and down-played by the BBC, below:

However, the 36-strong contingent of Scots returns home with three gold, four silver, six bronze.

Specifically on gold, with 3, Scotland won nearly three times as many, per head, than the just over 1 of the 14 UK total, their 8% population share should have meant.

    1. You have it right. The BBC ‘s attitude is that this was a BRITISH team so, Scotland is not relevant. We saw this with the Brexit result. BBC Scotland would not countenance any discussion about Scotland’s 62% vote to Remain in the EU, because ‘we were voting as one country’. The North of Ireland voted Remain, too, and the residents retain their European citizenship, are part of the single market, and have freedom of movement.

      1. I have just looked at the Wales page on the BBC website. It is unreservedly proud and uninhibitedly about the performances of Welsh Olympians. Contrast that with the negative headline framing of the performance of Scottish athletes on BBC Scotland.

    2. Even worse stat:- 327 athletes in team “GB”, 65 medals so 1 per 19 athletes

36 Scots with 13 medals at least 1 in 3 amazing Scots athletes wine medal, 1 in 3 a gold. Way to go Scotland.

  1. I doubt any are surprised by HMS James Cook reporting these days…

Forever burned in my memory is David Coleman’s “Great win for GB” versus “a shame for the Scot/Irish/Welsh” commentary, he couldn’t understand why any would view that as bias.

However, we should remember that just to get to compete at the Olympics is a monumental achievement – All these athletes are at the top of their game, medal or no medal….

  2. Scotland always wins out. Every competition. Independent would be even better. The saltire flying high. What anthem? Scotland recognised the world over. The Chinese 1.4Billion. ‘Scotland the land of invention and discovery’. US Scottish ancestry. True Scots identity. Tennis, golf and rugby originated in Scotland. Highland Games. Commonwealth Games,

The Games are far too much. Too much going on. They should be cut down to less. Too overwhelming. More sport in shorten boasts would be more manageable. Too costly and expensive. More exciting cut to smaller sections. Too much going on to watch it all. The Olympics millionaires. Every medal a million invested. Some excitement. An Olympics every two years but smaller section of competitions.

World class tennis centre investment in Perth. Murray legacy. Scotland getting its fair share for once. LTA investment. Swimming Scotland excels. Running and cycling champions. Wild swimming and cycling trails. Scottish scenery best in the world. More outdoor swimming centres opening up.
