How the SNP Government and MPs in London held back the tide of child poverty

By Professor John Robertson

From the Resolution Foundation‘s, Uneven ground: Assessing the state of UK geographic economic inequality facing the new Government, published today, see from the shading, how child poverty has surged from 20%-30% in much of England to over 40% after 8 more years of Tory austerity, following Scots voting to stay ‘chained to a maniac‘ in 2014.

In contrast, hammered by cuts to reserved benefits, child poverty has climbed from 15%-20% to 25%-30% in some parts of Scotland. SNP policies on devolved benefits and spending on housing costs have stemmed the worst.

56 SNP MPS in 2015 kept the UK Government worried and wary of doing more damage to Scotland.

What will 37 Scottish Labour MPs in 2024 do? You know the answer. SFA.

That, kept out of the minds of too many Scots, by appalling media avoidance of the truth, led to many voting, against their own economic interests, for Labour’s ‘Change’, in July.

  1. “Scottish” Labour Party candidates, rebellious defenders of the poor and needy who were led by Anas Sarwar until they became Labour Party MPs on 4th July in Westminster under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer. They immediately abandoned the poor and needy (and everyone else in Scotland), leaving the SNP’s MPs as the only ones out of the 650 in Westminster primarily looking after the interests of Scotland and its people.

  2. Labour for CHANGE ! Well , we’ll get that now that we have 37 Labour MPs desperate to keep their highly paid jobs .

How high did you want me to jump , Sir Keir ?

How many nuclear ticking time bomb reactors do you want us to foist on the Sweaty Jocks , Sir Ian ?

When do you want us to condemn the Scottish Child Payment , Sir Anas ?

How can we increase privatisation in the Scottish NHS , Sir Wes ?

  3. The London media and British nationalists like Bodger Broon just never mention the Scottish Child Payment.

With their customary ineffable arrogance, ‘Scottish’ Labour ‘slam’ the Scottish Government for not doing more.

  4. The appalling Westminster unionists are reaping what they sow. In terrible riots and destruction. People have been pushed to the limit for years.

The child poverty which could be easily prevented is another malicious act by UK governance. A terrible way to let children suffer. Along with the pensioners, the vulnerable and the sick. There is absolutely no justification to how unionist parties carry on. Unfit for government. Unfit for purpose. A deliberate act to ruin the society and communities. Unjust and unfair.

Those who can do. Those who can’t join unionist Parties, especially in Scotland. People know what to do vote them out. Do not be fooled. Vote for Independence parties and vote for Independence. A higher turnout. Do not let these Westminster malicious fools ruin people’s lives.

  5. I just wish they’d make an attempt at balanced reporting. I mean real balanced reporting.

Looking at those maps impartially, and commenting in a balanced fashion, I’d say:

1 – Yes, it’s fair to say that poverty has increased in most areas of Scotland between 2014-15 and 22-23.

2 – Looking at the entire map and the location of the darker areas, Scotland has far fewer areas of increase and (I’m assuming the blob to the right is Glasgow?) actual decrease in some areas.

3 – Something must be mitigating the circumstances. Let’s find out what. It could be of use to the whole Yookay!

Could it be *gasp* that Essempee Scottish Child payment thingy that nobody talks about?! Or maybe ScotGov making better decisions. Or maybe both!

This has got to be a good story for Dispatches.

    I know. It’s highly unlikely to happen…

  6. I’m afraid we can huff and puff as much as we like, but I, and many other canvassers were told on the doorsteps in 2015, ” The Labour Party have betrayed us, so never again”. So what happened? The fools have, once again, condemned us to at least another five years of austerity by an English Political Party. It doesn’t matter which one, they all have the same objective, no Independence for Scotland. They will walk all over us, and that would happen even if all Scottish M.Ps were from an Independence supporting political party. They, various English Governments, have stolen, over hundreds of years, our people, our oil, our renewable electricity, and shortly our water, if they haven’t already started. Are we so stupid that we can’t see this happening? It seems that we are.
