Research confirms SNP Child Payment does not discourage work

Social Security Scotland

Many thanks to Linda Graham of Broadcasting Scotland (support them at https://www.broadcastingscotland.scot/) for alerting me to this:

In the Telegraph on 24 July 2024:

SNP accused of creating ‘poverty trap’ over child payment which discourages work. The Scottish Child Payment, worth £26.70 per week to eligible parents, falls off cliff edge if they earn even £1 more.

The Telegraph‘s views were not based on any study of the data, ironically, given these findings published the same day:

Analysis of Universal Credit planning for work conditionality clients in Scotland – the vast majority of whom should be receiving Scottish Child Payment – compared with the same client group in England where Scottish Child Payment is not available, suggests these clients are consistently more likely to be in employment in Scotland and their likelihood of being in employment has not been affected by Scottish Child Payment.

If Scottish Child Payment has a significant effect on the employment earnings of Universal Credit clients eligible for Scottish Child Payment we might expect to see lower incentives to work reflected in rises in small Universal Credit award amounts in Scotland around the time of Scottish Child Payment milestones and compared with awards in England for similar households. However, trends in Scotland and England appear very similar to date, aside from small spikes in Scotland for low award amounts for new claims around the time of the eligibility extension in November 2022.

  1. Rather than praise the ( hated ? ) SNP Government for seeking to mitigate Child Poverty in Scotland , the Telegraph , true to its moral code , denigrates and questions the worth of a precious , life-saving payment for so many in need .

Propaganda by a news(?) outlet that is peopled by the type of scribblers who would happily see The Poor consigned to The Workhouse !

  2. It’s amazing how a good social support policy, (mitiagting EngGov terrible austerity) keeping little children out of poverty, can be twisted to be a bad policy by the BritNat states propaganda machine. I guess it worked in the past and works to some extent now, on some who still follow the right wing English rags and fake Scottish ones in Scotland. Sigh.

      1. Since the Express is full of excrement BEFORE you use it, it is ineffective for bum wiping. It puts more On than it takes off.

  3. Although the article is hidden behind the Telegraph’s paywall, managed to read the archive to see who was doing the accusing, and lo and behold – ‘ “The SNP have created a poverty trap where there are powerful disincentives rather than incentives to work,” Stephen Kerr, a senior Scottish Tory MSP, said. ‘

The author of the piece, Daniel Sanderson, not only saw fit to quote the hyperbolic musings of a man barely in control of his own teeth, but Sir Keir Starmer’s distortion of data to claim child poverty had risen in Scotland under the SNP, to contrive a typical Telegraph Tory alternate reality of life in Scotland…

Kerr was apparently in sales and marketing before a lapse in concentration by Stirling’s electorate saw him become an MP for a brief 2 years before coming to their senses… Juan has been selling and marketing himself as someone important ever since, and failing dismally in the process…

  4. The Telegraph tied up in tax evading Trusts. Losing monies faster than a sieve loses water. Trying to flog it to the Saudi Arabia. The world higher warmongering autocracy. No fairness there. If the tax evaders pay their tax there would be less children in poverty.

The child payment helping parents get into work and not relying on benefits. The opposite affect than the one contributed by the Telegraph. The ignorant , arrogant editorship. Going out of business and bankrupt. Rubbish news.
