I’ve been comparing the performance of the NHS in Scotland, England and Wales for years now to illustrate the superior performance across many targets, of the former.
From FULLFACT on 15 July 2024, corroboration of some of the above but reservations about the comparability of some where data collection methods differ. I agree with that reservation and often point to such but where the gaps are large, perhaps that matters less and, in terms of media coverage, the MSM will gaily compare the incomparable in, say, drug deaths.
So, first on cancer care, this:

Between October and December 2023, Scotland had the highest percentage of people meeting either target, with the lowest percentages in Wales. This doesn’t tell us the average wait time in each nation, however, which might show a different picture. We don’t know how Wales compares, because the targets there are different.
Second, A&E:

The differences are even greater for the 12 hour wait. See: https://talkingupscotlandtwo.com/2024/07/01/three-times-as-many-wait-more-than-12-hours-in-englands-ae-departments/
Third on GP availability:
We also have information about people’s satisfaction with GP services collected by the ONS for England, Wales and Scotland. Between October 2023 and March 2024, 50% of respondents in Scotland said they found it easy or very easy to access their GP practice, compared with 43% in England and 39% in Wales. The lower percentages in England and Wales do not differ significantly from each other, so again there’s a reasonable chance that there might not be a difference between the share of people in the two countries who would give these answers. However, in Scotland, significantly more people did say they found it easy to access their GP.
Now on overall waiting lists, FULLFACT points to problems in comparison which I full accept but when you see the scale of the differences between the other three and NHS Scotland, that suggest far fewer waiting overall.

Noting the limits, Scotland clearly has fewer waiting than any of the other nations.

Unfortunately I think that the main weakness is at the GP end of the spectrum. Certainly at the hospital end I have absolutely no complaints.

I’d have to agree. Last week we got letters from our surgery to say they were closing in November. 6000 patients and other local surgeries refusing new.
