Anger as Herald lies about inward investment double UK average in ‘SNP’ Scotland

Brian Donnelly: Anger as SNP housing law makes Scotland ‘no-go zone’ for investors (Image: NQ/Getty/PA)

In the Herald today, Brian Donnelly writes the above and:

A senior housing industry figure has claimed Scotland has become a “no-go zone” for investors.

He warns the SNP over housing laws that include rent controls will keep housebuilding in years of stagnation and Labour over its potential capping plans.

Some facts:

According to EY’s annual independent analysis of inward investment, 142 FDI projects were secured last year, an increase of 12.7% on 2022 and double the rate of growth experienced across the UK.

Scotland’s share of UK FDI projects increased for a fifth year in a row to 14.4%. Investor perception of Scotland also increased, with 26% of potential investors surveyed by EY saying they were planning to invest in Scotland – up from 19.2% in 2022. Seizing opportunities presented by new technology and accessing skills were among the main reasons given for establishing or expanding operations.

The performance underpins Scotland’s position as the top performing area of the UK outside of London – for a ninth consecutive year.

Some more facts:

From Inside Housing on 30 November:

“The best housing minister we’ve had for 20 years.” That is the verdict of one Scottish social housing source when asked by Inside Housing to describe Paul McLennan. It is remarkable praise for anyone to receive, but particularly impressive for a minister who has been in the role for only eight months, and an MSP for two years.

Inside Housing caught up with the minister via video call to find out more about how his new brief is going, what his aims are and how he has managed to win over the Scottish housing sector. We also wanted to know what he thinks of Inside Housing’s Build Social campaign for the UK to add 100,000 social rent homes a year.

On that last one, it is probably no surprise that a Scottish National Party (SNP) housing minister is broadly supportive of the campaign to get Britain building more social rent homes. “The first minister said it’s a key strategic objective for the Scottish government to deliver on our target [of] 110,000 [affordable] houses by 2032,” Mr McLennan tells Inside Housing.

And the Scottish government has promised that 70% of those affordable homes will be for social rent. That is, 7,700 a year. Build Social’s target for Scotland is asking the Scottish government to recommit to this figure.https://www.insidehousing.co.uk/insight/scottish-housing-minister-social-housing-is-build-to-save-83841

How are we doing so far?

From the impartial Grampian Online in January 2023:

Scotland has continued the trend of outperforming the rest of the UK in delivering affordable housing.

In the last financial year 9757 homes have been built for social rent, mid-market rent, and affordable ownership.

Scotland continues to outperform the rest of the UK by building 13.9 homes per 10,000 population, compared with 8.0 in Wales, 9.7 in England and 13.0 per 10,000 in Northern Ireland.https://www.grampianonline.co.uk/news/scotland-outperforms-uk-in-building-affordable-housing-298925/

13.9 per 10 000 is 74% better than the 8 in Labour Wales

The historical trend?

Labour’s performance when they were in power?

Looking specifically at social rent completions, from 2000-01 to 2006-07 Scottish Labour delivered 28,988 homes. In the period since the SNP assumed power, 52,558 homes have been delivered.

This works out as an average of 4,141 houses delivered per year under the Labour administration. Under the SNP, there have been 4,778 delivered on average each year.https://theferret.scot/snp-social-rent-labour/

  1. Excellent work as usual John but once again we must ask why the Scottish Government seems incapable of responding to these lies. At the very least a government minister should be writing to the Herald to rebut their lies.

    1. Of course I don’t know for certain if Paul McLellan has written to the Herald, but do ,you really think T.P.A, that they would, for one minute, take any notice? The sole function of the “British” media is to lie to the Scottish people. For over 300years they have tried, and in a lot of cases, succeeded, in convincing our electorate that we are better off ruled by Westminster. The most recent example is of course the General Election. Naw, the old saying still applies, ” The lie is halfway around the world, before truth gets its boots on”. This site does its best to expose the untruths, but I’m afraid the M.S.M, despite its diminishing readership, is still all powerful. And of course it has the unstinting support of the best propaganda outlet in the world, the B.B.C. Any derogatory views about the Scottish Government, are broadcast without question. How exactly do you combat that, because as all of us here well know, it happens on a daily basis, otherwise there would be no need for John to to go to such trouble to tell us the truth.

      1. If a government minister wrote to the paper about a lie they had printed they would be obliged to print the letter. If they refused then this would be a story in itself, one that could be used.

    2. And what makes you think the SG does not do as you are saying and the media just ignore it because Westminster is where the kind of power the media responds to lies.

  2. Attacking the very corrupt media is the only way we can show what is really happening in Scotland on our way to securing Independence.

    1. I wish I had read that idea a couple of days ago – when filling out John Swinney’s survey.

An excellent idea – only I wouldn’t limit it to the one.
