As outsourced cleaning results in deadly infection outbreak via basins and showers in an English hospital how this Scottish Health Secretary kept cleaning in-house 16 years ago to save uncounted lives

By Professor John Robertson

Today in the Health Service Journal:

Frimley Health had 94 cases of CPE last year, due to a major outbreak at Wexham Park

The trust has ordered a mortality and morbidity review but does not say if it has been completed

CPE thought to travel through drains, affecting wash basins and showers.

A hospital trust has ordered a review of potential death and harm caused by an outbreak of a serious healthcare-acquired infection, which is resistant to many antibiotics.

Frimley Health Foundation Trust has seen outbreaks of carbapenemase-producing enterobacterales at both its Frimley Park and Wexham Park sites, starting in the middle of last year, it has emerged. In total, it identified 94 new CPE cases in 2023–24 — 75 at Wexham Park and 19 at Frimley Park. This compares with just 20 in total in 2022–23.

It is not clear what the outcomes were for patients infected with CPE, which is associated with a high mortality rate but often infects patients who are already seriously ill. The trust has commissioned a mortality and morbidity review but refused to answer any questions about it before publication.

‘Refused to answer any questions about it before publication?’ I bet they have, on GE day.

As soon as saw this, I was reminded:

Why might Scotland’s hospitals be cleaner? One reason:

  1. Good point.
But now Serco etc. is everywhere in SNHS, sadly, including domestics, so I can’t share this.

  2. Well , now that Labour is on the ‘rise’ , private cleaning companies can finally get value for their donations to the party .

Will Damn Jackie Baillie still be moaning about hospital infections in her constituency if Labour , by some miracle , become numero uno in Holyrood ? Will it be the wrong kind of dead pigeon in their water tanks or will she blame Cleaning Companies cutting corners to boost their profits ?

  3. Time for BBC Scotland to resurrect the pigeon shit story and link it to the death from cancer of a child and the horror story told by a consultant to John Beattie at a dinner party that she was not personally told to hand-sanitise during Covid, despite there being hand sanitiser at the door and large notices telling people to do so.

Outsourcing will prevent all these things -NOT.
