Based on data from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service and Police Scotland, we can see a clear improving trend in the length of time an average court case takes.
2021 – 21 weeks
2022 – 17 weeks
2023 – 16 weeks
2024 so far – 15 weeks.

Maybe so, but I have a friend who was charged with a serious offence over two years ago, and it now looks likely that their trial won’t go ahead until sometime in 2025. I know, I know, I sound like the B.B.C picking one case out of tens of thousands, but it’s the only example I have. I can say that there have been no extenuating circumstances in this case that would have caused such a delay, which I feel is an extra burden, and worry, on all the parties involved.

Years to come to Court. Too many on remand, losing jobs. Too many people in prison instead of proper rehab. Too many neurodiverse people in prison. Charging then investigating. Instead of investigating then charging. Should be a caution for mild misdeamenours.
