No sign that Scottish farmer confidence is low in contrast with all of Europe thanks to SNP Government actions

By Professor John Robertson

In the Guardian today:

Farmer confidence at lowest in England and Wales since survey began, NFU says. Union cites extreme wet weather and post-Brexit phasing-out of EU subsidies as main reasons for slump

There’s no mention of Scotland in the survey.

I had a look and can find no equivalent survey for Scottish farmers but did spot this from the Scottish Farmer in March :

NFU Scotland has stepped back from the protest movement sweeping across Europe by the agriculture sector.

President Martin Kennedy spoke out after more than 100 vehicles, many flying the Union flag and banners, took to the streets around Westminster on Monday evening.

Mr Kennedy said the discontent in some parts of the UK is ‘fully understandable’ but stopped short of calling for colleagues in Scotland from protesting.

In some parts of the UK but not in Scotland, we must assume.

Why might that be?

Again from the Scottish Famer:

“Given the announcements we heard from the First Minister at our National AGM in Glasgow on February 9, it now looks like the Scottish Government has listened to many of NFU Scotland’s key priorities.

“The announcement that we will maintain the current levels of support up to 2027, and from 2027 we will still maintain at least 70% of support as direct support, has given a degree of confidence back to the industry.

“With the addition of maintaining a disadvantaged area support package alongside continuing coupled payments, this will also allow farmers and crofters to start to plan ahead again.”

  1. Yep some of these same farmers (and Fisherman) thought it best to vote Brexit and then it eventually dawned on them that they had actually voted for BrexSh*t (Rhymes with Spit)…..

Tory UK government assured them that they , the Farmers, would receive a like for like subsidy to match what they had previously got from the EU…..and that turned out to be a crock of BrexSh*t also……plus the Trade deals made with New Zealand & Australia ended up being better for their Farmers than for the ones here in the UK…..even the then Tory Environment Secretary George Eustice conceded that the Trade deal with Australia was “not actually a very good deal for the UK”……as “this included giving Australia or New Zealand full access to the UK market to sell beef and sheep, while Australia still bans the import of British beef”

Fresh lamb and Beef…..all the way from Australia & New Zealand…..LOL

Labour , also pro Brexit, are already saying (using excuses) that they may not have the money to do all that they have been ‘pledging’ they will do if elected as the next UK government….so duck knows where that will leave Farmers (and Fishermen)……the best they can do is to try and con voters that they can “Make BrexSh*t work” as to Brexit…..not so much……it’s (BrexSh*t) that has largely brought the Tories down and I suspect it will do the same to the Labour party…..their Honeymoon period will be short…..and I see a divorce pending for voters in their UK once the proverbial you know what hits the fan(tasy) that they have been (over) pledging/promising…. all to gain (undeserved) votes in order to gain (undeserved) power……

Just wait until Labour are in charge in their UK…..Old MacDonald had a farm and he’ll soon be saying, to Labour, more than just E-I-E-I-O……LOL

  3. The EU contribution was €2Billion. More came back. CAP payments, shared Defence costs, nearest biggest market. Fish & beef went there for higher prices. 400million market.

Beneficial business agreements with China, US, India protectionist markets. Prices have gone up 1/3. More price increases to come. Students lost reciprocal study agreements. Travel broadens the mind.
