The SNP government’s survival did not depend on Green votes only on their refusal to vote with this unholy Blue alliance

From BBC Scotland today:

The SNP government’s survival depended on Green votes

David Henderson

BBC Scotland political correspondent

The chamber of the Scottish Parliament is an impressive place. More so on a day like today. Noisy too.

There was a full house of MSPs. Notable among them, former FM Nicola Sturgeon.

The debate today – on Motion 13005 – was a matter of political life and death. A vote of no confidence, with the survival of this Scottish government at stake.

So it was a bit odd to see Humza Yousaf as its principal defender. He’s already lost his job. Would his colleagues follow suit?

The Greens forced the FM out of office. But they’ve shown they’re not willing to go the whole hog, and remove the government too.

The motion of no confidence was defeated by 70 votes to 58. So this storm has passed.

This is untrue, the SNP’s survival only depended on the Greens not voting with the unholy Tory/Lab/Lib/Alba alliance. Surely they could never have done this for fear of their own members?

All the Greens had to do was to abstain and cause a 63/58 win for the SNP on their own but, notably, they went beyond that and, despite the fall-out, voted with the SNP. The Greens know that only the SNP share their values and that they need second votes from SNP voters for their survival.

  1. I see the BBC have no information about the confidence vote – just a passing mention near the bottom of another article. Surely a serious professional news reporting organisation would have coverage of a vote with potential to remove a government? Oh stupid me, the BBC is not a serious professional balanced news reporting organisation, just a biased propaganda machine.

    1. This is very odd. I have just posted this on another blog site:

The BBC News website’s Scotland pages published an article on 30 April entitled: ‘Scottish government to face vote of no confidence’. Factual so to be expected – normal.

This evening (at 2200 hours on 1 May) I can see no mention on the BBC News website of the result of the vote of no confidence in the Scottish Government that took place today. Anyone noticed coverage? Lack of coverage to be expected? Normal? Hardly – candidly very odd!

A Labour defeat and an SNP victory with Scottish Greens support is not newsworthy for the BBC website’s Scotland editors?

And the spectacle of an Alba Party MSP voting with Unionists not newsworthy either?

One wonders what calculations the BBC News website editors in Scotland made to omit all this?

  2. I noted with interest that the Welsh FM troubles was brought PMQs but I don’t see or hear anything about it on RP Scotland or door stopping Sarwar by the likes of Kerr or Cook.

    1. You won’t either!!! General election coming up and very obvious that BlueLabour control most of the media, it wouldn’t do to show the public the true face of labour, who are in serious trouble in Wales. We definitely would not be told any of this in Scotland only that snpbad line will do for them!!!

    1. Dear Anonymous, it is not a D’Hondt additional member system we have. It is a Bruce-Dewar system. D’Hondt distributes seats in proportion to the votes each party received, hence the term ‘proportional representation’. Bruce-Dewar distributes seats in a disproportionate manner. Check the numbers, yours sincerely, Jim the Pedantic.

  3. Labour proceeded with their VONC in the Scottish government to:

Prolong all of this in the media circus…..(and we all know who the real clowns are in all of this)

Try to generate uncertainty and a lack of confidence in the Scottish government (and too very much independence itself) via the public.

Trash TV news and newspapers (take your pick) are rabid and their glee cannot be contained but it is based more on what they hope will unfold as opposed to what may actually eventually unfold…….also often known as a reality check.

What is now being promoted/reported is that recent events connected to the SNP will have a negative impact on future support for independence in Scotland…..

Meanwhile all past and recent negative events/issues/problems connected to all pro UK parties somehow never ever are promoted as having any impact on support diminishing for the UK, in it still being sustained and still being supported by the people of Scotland……

That seems a tad unfair and illogical…..but…………..

That’s the UK way….simples. (and they are doing it deliberately too….)

  4. I posted elsewhere a few days ago on this bit of historical political drama:

‘We all know over how many years individuals in the Labour Party in Scotland have sought to tarnish the reputation of the SNP by claiming – disingenuously (and wrongly according to PM Callaghan’s memoires) – that in Westminster its vote with the Tories brought down a Labour government and enabled Thatcher to gain power. This still gets trotted out decades later.

‘If Alba and the Greens do vote with the Unionist parties in Holyrood – finding common cause with Douglas Ross’ Tories that a majority of voters in Scotland have rejected at the ballot box time after time after time and with the democracy-denying (‘no indy ref ever again’) Labour – in the upcoming confidence votes and this does bring down the present SNP Scottish Government, their actions may become as ‘memorable’ and reviled. But unlike Labour’s peddling of the falsehood that led to Thatcher, the voting by Alba and the Scottish Greens with the London-led Unionist parties will be a well-documented, self-evident alliance in support of a Unionist objective. The stakes here concern not just the fate of a political party!’

Although we lost a FM to resignation in advance of a VoNC in him, with related uncertainty over how each Green MSP and Alba’s sole MSP would have voted, in Labour’s VoNC today in the SNP government, the Greens – the same MSPs whom certain factions of pro-Yes folk claim are NOT REALLY committed to independence – voted WITH the SNP (didn’t even take the abstention option) and AGAINST the Unionist parties. The sole Alba MSP voted WITH THE BETTER TOGETHER COALITION – plain and simple, clear for all to see (even though the BBC News website is seeking to shield its readers from the appalling fact.)

The attempts on social media by Alba Party stalwarts to spin this as of no consequence are risible. An Alba abstention OK – just about acceptable given the context – but a vote for this tawdry motion and in support of those that deny even Scotland’s right to decide on its future? Truly, I never thought the Alba Party would even conceive of such an act!

  5. So BBC Debate night has included Ash Regan and Lorna Slater on their panel….of course they have.

Preston tonight has the Labour branch office manager Anas Sarwar as a guest…of course it does.

BBC QT tomorrow in Cambridge has an SNP MP on it’s panel…of course they do.

Both the BBC & ITV are orchestrating a pile on during what is a time of mega over promoted troubled times for the SNP by the media….while we also see one of them, ITV, laying out the red carpet for Sarwar to do what he does best……playing politics…..to try and gain an undeserved political advantage in Scotland for his party at Labour HQ…..

Of course not forgetting that BBC Debate night will also have it’s plants and anti SNP Bad (majority) section within the audience too…..where some of them are scarily so well versed in what they apparently state is the truth , the whole truth and nothing but the truth……though many a time tis more really nothing like the truth re their opinions and observations upon both the SNP as a party and as the Scottish government .

Yet also what is scary is that these same Sheeple are also seemingly non concerned, non angry, in fact somewhat nonchalant as to the actions/scandals/policies etc of the HQ’s of both the Labour & Tory party.( I say this as these Sheeple on these debate programmes in Scotland seem to have more animosity and complaints against the SNP than all of the other political parties put together) indeed it is almost as if they think that , Labour HQ & Tory HQ, have no influence, impact or involvement within Scotland……..as a UK government or an official opposition party !

The media are going in for the kill……the Sheeple will endorse this……however ask some of these same Sheeple if their allegiance to the UK would extend to closing down the Scottish parliament and thus we Scots, like our English friends, being governed only by a UK government…..thus us losing many of the benefits as provided by the SNP run Scottish government (which they as Sheeple fail to acknowledge or appreciate) then somehow, I am sure, their beloved UK as a state will somehow no longer be considered as such a desirable, attractive and welcome only option available to them as a government …as for them having the best of both worlds is hardly a defined position….surely the sheeple should want to share the Utopia , as they see it, that all people in England experience and live with as those governed only by a UK government……as you cannot, as one who is a sheeple, be half way in and half way out…that is in that they want to still gain benefits via our devolved government while still bending the knee to their UK….but reluctant to actually cede control completely to UK domination by being governed only by one UK government whose parliament is based in another country……TBH as a position that to me does not make sense…..as you are either fully IN or your fully OUT as opposed to being half way in both as a situation ……that is as a welcome position for them to be in…..

As to us being governed by a Scottish devolved government via a Pro UK party….well we have already suffered that and still suffer some of the consequences…..most notably the consequences as a result of PFI debt in Scotland but also I am sure Tuition fees would be brought in line with that of England’s and too similar consequences for those on benefits as those in England also…..and would free prescription charges survive in Scotland also….that I also doubt will be sustained.

I guess some people (Sheeple) should be careful what they wish for as the current Hate Fest being orchestrated by the media, opposition parties and also some Sheeple may end up with them (and us) being placed in what will surely be a worst case scenario….in that they (and we) will lose many of the benefits and good policies via the SNP to be replaced with OMG what the H have we (not us but them….Sheeple…. LOL) done if , and I doubt it, a pro UK party would ever again gain control in Scotland as the Scottish government ! (Not forgetting BREXIT too ..or rather they, the Sheeple, are (conveniently) forgetting BREXIT)

Alas some people (Sheeple) will never learn…..and some I am sure will make the same mistakes time and time again…..while oblivious to the same consequences happening……while never realising why that is so…..I heard BBC Debate night tonight had it’s usual (un)fair share of plants and Nay sayers in the audience….aka Sheeple….colour me surprised…..NOT…..LOL

    Wha’s like (some of) us…indeed.
