Measles cases surge from 0 in Scotland all ‘linked’ to travel….and County Lines drug gangs?

From Public Health Scotland today (well tomorrow, it seems):

Public Health Scotland is aware of five cases of laboratory confirmed measles in Scotland since October 2023, all of which have been linked to travel. The latest two cases were confirmed today, 16 February 2024.

Why is five a surge? It’s up from zero, each year, since 2020. See graph above with 2020 mistakenly labelled 2000.

Where might these cases have travelled from?

From the Times two days ago:

Measles outbreak fear as London overtakes Midlands in cases. Pockets of unvaccinated people in the capital create ‘perfect conditions’ for disease as confirmed cases exceed 1,000 in England since October.

What’s a particularly popular reason for travel from England’s larger cities into Scotland?

From the Daily Mail last month:

Scotland is seeing an explosion of ‘county lines’ gangs forcing children and vulnerable adults to smuggle drugs to every corner of the country. The Scottish Mail on Sunday can reveal at least 55 gangs have been identified operating north of the Border – more than double the number in 2020. County lines is the phenomenon whereby drug dealers from cities expand their operation by crossing county borders into smaller towns and rural areas. Gangs from parts of England have forced youngsters and vulnerable adults – aged from 14 to 77 – to smuggle packages of heroin, crack cocaine and other narcotics into Scotland on buses and trains.

Why is it only 5 cases in Scotland? This:

In calendar year 2023; 93.0% of children had the first dose of MMR vaccine by 24 months of age. This rose to 95.2% for children who had reached age 5.

https://publichealthscotland.scot/publications/childhood-immunisation-statistics-scotland/childhood-immunisation-statistics-scotland-quarter-and-year-ending-31-december-2023/#:~:text=In%20calendar%20year%202023%3B,90.4%25%20by%20age%206%20years.

95% gives herd immunity.

What’s the vaccination situation in the bigger English cities where County Lines gangs are based?

London – 74%! Birmingham and Bradford – 83%.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-00265-8#:~:text=Vaccination%20rates%20are%20lowest%20in,97%25%20effective%20against%20catching%20measles.

But within these cities, the rate is even lower.

For example:

From BBC Liverpool from where many County Lines gangs travel to Scotland:

A consultant at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Hospital said he fears children will die unless there is a significant increase in MMR vaccinations. Vaccination rates in parts of the city are as low as 50%, and there has been a rise in measles cases across England.

  1. I see no comments yet so I will post this one.

BBC blasted as Angela Rayner interview ‘editing’ row erupts after Labour ‘raised concerns’The BBC’s Newsnight editor has admitted to editing out a reference to the “Beergate” scandal during an interview with Angela Rayner.

Reading this it brought to mind the way BBC journalists hounded our Nicola Sturgeon along with the rest of the MSM.

    1. Yes O/T

The support for Rayner by Labour supporting bloggers etc, who also don’t want to know that Rayner jumped very quickly onto the demonising, via the TV, to castigate Nicola Sturgeon with no evidence for any misdemeanour, when the cops plonked blue tents in her garden and have continued the with hunt for two years now. But no poor Angela, the fawning over her by some is weird, like she can do no wrong. Shame these people have such double standards when it comes to the SNP, some who have been hounded out by the BritNat media with not a snifter of condemnation by the same folk fawning over Rayner now.

  2. 55 English drugs gangs operating in Scotland is a terrifying number, one is too many. Where are the police on this in Scotland, I don’t suppose English police care one bit about stopping this on their side of the border either, probs happy to see them moving into and operating in Scotland. That needs to be stopped and stopped damn well quick!

  3. County lines Drug gangs is the missing part in all reports promoted by the media and politicians when in reference to drugs in Scotland…..yet one would have thought it was a hugely significant factor……a tactical omission ?

Perhaps it is something the Justice secretary could seek to explore and have investigated as to the consequences it has upon Scotland and the problems with the drugs accessibility here……. where data could be published which would at least give the Scottish public a sense of how some drugs were coming into Scotland and from whom and where……currently if one listens to the media and opposition parties one would think it was the Scottish government who were solely to blame.

Nothing is ever simply a black and white position, which is the preferred method by which our media and politicians from opposing parties love to present it as when referring to what is happening in Scotland, there is always many other factors that contribute to a problem which are not factors the actual Scottish government is to blame for…….or indeed have any control or responsibility for as they must adhere to some matters which are reserved to the UK government UK policies.

One only needs to listen to both the UK and Welsh governments to hear how they always use excuses to try to explain why there is a problem within their countries…..

We often hear, via the UK & Welsh governments, that the source of their various problems involve mitigating circumstances outwith their control…

However there is never a recognition or acknowledgement of any mitigating circumstances for the government in Scotland….which, using logic, seems somewhat unfair and illogical to think that of all the governments within the UK, the public ,are expected to think that tis only the Scottish government that was and is the one government who are not ‘allowed’ to refer to or highlight the huge significance of some specific mitigating circumstances that hinders their progress and success in some areas…….and the media here apply Omerta upon that fact…and tis for obvious reasons …..just as they, the media, apply a widespread Omerta upon on all successes or positive initiatives sourced and implemented via the Scottish government.

Thus when it is promoted as bad aka #SNPBAD then the buck is always promoted as being…… that it…. stops with them, the Scottish government, and them alone….if one listens to both the media and opposition parties.
