Disbelief spreading as Government is reportedly considering a Wellington mega tunnel after axing Cook Strait mega ferry project

New Zealand media is alive with

From News Fahara today:

Disbelief is spreading as the Government is reportedly considering a Wellington mega tunnel after axing the Cook Strait mega ferry project. The proposed tunnel, which would run underneath the capital city, has raised eyebrows due to its potential multi-billion dollar price tag. The decision comes on the heels of the Government’s refusal to fund the ferry project, which had seen significant cost overruns.

And from the NZ Herald, also today:

There’s disbelief the Government is considering a mega tunnel underneath Wellington, that will cost several billion dollars, after axing the Cook Strait mega ferry project due to cost blowouts. This morning the Herald revealed the Government is mulling twin two-lane tunnels running north of the existing Terrace Tunnel to Wellington Road.

The two projects:

Wellington Mega Tunnel4km$10 billion
Cook Strait Ferry ProjectN/A$3 billion

Why might the Mega Tunnel be a bad idea, beyond the cost?

The Cook Strait region is considered a seismically active area, and earthquakes can be dangerous depending on their magnitude and proximity to populated areas.

Who advised the NZ Government on this? Boris Johnson?

How are things in Scotland with those two ferries that Tory transport spokesman Liam Kerr and this guy said would never sail?

Where are they now? Oh, yes, in the water.

  2. Yes most ridiculous idea ever, NZ has a geological fault running underneath right next to Wellington, through to the South island. No one in their right mind would even consider building a transport tunnel on an active fault line. Their government sounds incapable of making sensible, rational, safety conscious decisions, seems the trend these days across the globe. Sigh.
