Why are BBC Scotland’s ‘ageing ferries’ far younger than Washington State’s ‘ageing ferries?’

A 45 year-old Washington State (USA) Issaquah Class ferry

From King-TV Seattle today:

Washington State Ferries (WSF) received $4.8 million in federal funding to refurbish six aging boats in its fleet, Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell announced Wednesday.

The federal grant will pay for upgrades on WSF’s Issaquah Class Vessels, originally constructed between 1979 and 1982. The vessels currently serve travellers on the Fauntleroy-Southworth-Vashon, Mukilteo-Clinton, and Anacortes-San Juan Islands routes.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, from BBC Scotland in May 2022:

The problem with CalMac’s ageing ferries. Announcements that Caledonian MacBrayne ferries have been withdrawn from service for repairs are becoming an increasingly common occurrence.

Most islands in the west of Scotland rely on services from state-owned CalMac, which operates 34 vessels – the largest fleet in the UK. But CalMac has a problem – the pace of renewal has been slow and the ageing boats are developing more faults, leading to delays and cancellations. Four of the 10 largest ferries are beyond their expected operational life.

The average age of the CalMac ferries is more than 24 years and many of the large boats are even older. Of the 10 largest ferries, four are more than 30 years old and the MV Isle of Arran is 40.

So, in one of the most affluent parts of the USA, of the World even, 40-45 years of service makes a ferry ageing and unreliable but in Scotland it’s only 30 years?

And, the CalMac average is 24. Just out of interest, the US average?

WSF don’t publish this data but a quick check of their wikipedia page reveals that 11 of their 21 ferries are 38 years or older.

  1. Its all a BBC smokescreen of meaningless nonsense , there isnt a private company anywhere in the world that could come take over Scottish ferries and give a better service sure they could give the contract to a private company that would drastically cut services and increase prices probably with the same ferries used at present where else would they get ferries to do all the services currently provided. The thing is we already know that the BBC staff that write these reports don use the ferry services regularly we already know the people they interview to get a damning report are folk who live in holiday homes on the isles sometimes but mostly live elsewhere or they are active members of the britnat parties looking to portray Scottish government in a bad light.

By definition, if something is ‘average age’ then around half of the others in the sample will be older. But, around half will be younger, too.
